Emma: The Lumiose Street Kid Who Battles as Essentia

2262 words | Reading time: 11 minutes

Kalos has a heroine with no home, no Poké Ball and not the faintest idea how to read. Emma gets by on her own in the back alleys of Lumiose City, with an Espurr that was never actually caught, and the game only reveals her once the League has been beaten. What follows is a brutal arc: taken in by a detective, hired as a test subject by an inventor, then sent against the player inside a suit of armor she has no control over. She comes out of it running her own agency.

A Street Kid, a Back Alley and an Espurr

Emma makes her entrance in Pokémon X and Y as an orphan sleeping rough somewhere in Lumiose City. That's a rare position in the franchise: Kalos's protagonists come out of comfortable homes, while she comes out of a back alley.

Her look tells you everything about her situation before she says a word. Tanned skin, a thick head of brown hair tied in spiky pigtails, a blue top with a white collar part of which has been patched up, an orange miniskirt and ballet flats, worn-out black tights. The game almost always shows her closed off: she only lightens up at the end of a case, around her Pokémon, or on the day the detective leaves.

Her only company goes by a nickname, Mimi, and it's an Espurr. No Poké Ball ever entered the picture: she never had the money to pay for one, so their bond doesn't rest on any capture. The little Pokémon, for its part, is extremely wary and bolts the moment an adult comes near.

The Encounter: A Passage Guarded by Kids

The player only runs into Emma once the League has been won, during the first real case taken on with Looker. She is hiding at the far end of a passage, and kids are guarding the entrance: you have to beat them one by one to get through.

Reaching her isn't enough. Mimi bolts at the sight of the two visitors, and it's up to the player to coax it and bring it back; only once her Pokémon has calmed down does Emma agree to trust them. The detective then offers her a roof over her head at the agency, in exchange for working as his assistant.

The cases that follow flesh her out in small touches. You learn that she doesn't back down from the neighborhood thugs, and that she can make herself understood by visitors from abroad: Mimi's telepathy then serves as translation. Looker, for his part, teaches her to read, something she had never learned at all.

Essentia: A Suit of Armor, an Inventor and a String of Crimes

Emma eventually decides she isn't much use to the agency. So she sets off to find a real job and gets hired as a test subject by Xerosic, to try out the device he has just developed: the Expansion Suit. Too naive to smell a trap, she never sees it coming.

The full-body suit becomes a tool for crime: masked and renamed Essentia, the child commits one offense after another without the slightest awareness of it. Since she was never a Trainer, Xerosic has to teach her the basics of battling and lend her his own Pokémon, which end up growing attached to her. The player faces her three times, in three different corners of the city, and the suit's camouflage gives her a different appearance at each encounter.

The resolution comes through Malva, who takes the player to Lysandre Labs and opens up a secret floor for them — the one where Xerosic works, which she wants gone as a matter of honor. The place only opens once the main story is wrapped up. Among the archives, Essentia fights four battles in a row with four different teams, the first three being beefed-up versions of the ones from the back alleys. Healing is allowed between rounds.

Freed by Her Own Manipulator, Then Head of an Agency

During this series of battles, Xerosic pushes his control device to the max — and that's when he cracks. Taking pity on the girl, he cuts off his hold on her. Emma comes to, convinced she has had a bad dream, then heads back to the agency with Mimi and the player, with no memory of what she was made to do.

Looker arrests the inventor, and both men say goodbye to her on the same day. The detective hands the agency over to her so she can carry on the work; Xerosic, for his part, leaves her the armor — stripped of its remote control — and his Pokémon. The team on record under Emma's name draws on two sources, the Pokémon Xerosic left her in X and Y and the ones she only uses in the following game: Lucario, Abomasnow, Granbull, Persian, Mawile, Jellicent, Malamar, Lopunny, Whimsicott, Volcarona, Mareep, Ampharos and Crobat, not counting Mimi.

Once the story is over, you can still battle her: one rematch a day, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, at the agency, with a stronger version of the last lineup you faced at the lab. A detail players rarely notice: her sprite has changed since Lysandre Labs, Emma's face can be made out under the helmet — a way of signaling who is really in command of the armor.

The character got a sequel. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it's Emma who runs the Looker Bureau and who calls on the player for her cases, a long series of missions helping the city's residents. Her look was reworked for the occasion: shorter hair held back by an orange hair clip, and a beige jacket worn over the Expansion Suit, with a Key Stone set into it.

The same game uses her as a top-tier opponent: the Infinite Z-A Royale puts her up against the player in the thirteenth match, and from the twenty-first onward she can turn up again among the possible opponents. The mobile game, for its part, added her on February 17, 2023, in her original outfit and as a sync pair with a Crobat.

On Screen: The Host in Horizons and the Thief in Generations

In Pokémon Horizons, she shows up in episode 113. Roy and Ult, beaten in a clash with a Shiny Lucario, are taken in by her at the agency, where she serves them a celebration meal; she is so clumsy that Mimi spends the whole scene preventing breakages. When the power goes out, she Mega Evolves her Ampharos to get the electricity back on.

The episode also gives her backstory in a single line. As for Ult, she tells Roy, she took him under her wing because she often saw him back when he was sleeping on the streets, just as she had before him: a man had gotten her out of there, before handing his agency down to her. She admits she has never had the slightest sign of attachment from Ult, but says she immediately picked up on the way he acted around Roy — and asks Roy to be his friend, which he accepts.

Her other appearance is darker. The seventeenth episode of Pokémon Generations puts her at the center of the story: helmeted, she strips the Trainers she defeats of their Pokémon. Looker and Mimi eventually catch up with her, the Espurr recognizes its friend on the spot, and a chase intercut with flashbacks leads everyone to Lysandre Café. There, Mimi smashes Essentia's helmet and reveals a child who remembers nothing.

In the Manga: Team Flare's Tool, Then a Traveling Companion

The manga flips the order of introductions: Mimi shows up first, toward the end of volume 2 of the X and Y arc. The control comes from a Grunt, sent by Team Flare to hunt for Mega Stones, who manipulates four Espurr at once. Cassius's Gourgeist knocks out our Espurr; Clemont wants to examine the organ hidden under their ears, awakens their power and gets sent flying. Three of them vanish, and the last one ends up with Emma, who appears in just one panel, the very last one of the volume.

The next volume unleashes Essentia in the field as backup for Team Flare, fresh out of a lab where the armor has been upgraded. A single Trevenant is enough for her to rough up the Vaniville Town gang, until a Mega Gengar turns the tables. Surrounded, she tries to sow confusion with optical camouflage and takes on the features of X, then those of Tierno; the function goes haywire and the armor runs out of power. Xerosic orders a retreat, and she obeys.

In volume 4, she follows X to the base Team Flare has dug beneath Geosenge Town. There she tells the story of her escape: her parents "did horrible things," and she held out in the city's passages, surrounded by other kids and Pokémon, until the day someone pointed her toward Cassius, who took her in. One of her odd-job contracts bears the words "test subject." Separated from X by a teleporter, she carries on alone and stumbles upon the cell of AZ; Tierno, Trevor, Y and Shauna join her, and the group frees the former king, who tasks them with getting their hands on the key that can deactivate the ultimate weapon. Never having been taught, she refers to herself by name instead of saying "I": "Emma will come with you" stands in for the first person.

  • Who is Essentia?
It's the masked identity under which Emma commits a string of crimes, wearing the Expansion Suit developed by Xerosic. Controlled remotely, she has no awareness of what she is being made to do.
  • How do you battle Emma after the story ends?
She offers a rematch once a day, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, at the Looker Bureau. There she battles with a stronger version of the team she used at Lysandre Labs.
  • Does Emma appear in the animated series?
Yes, in two series. She appears from episode 113 of Pokémon Horizons, where she welcomes Roy and Ult at the agency, and she is the central character of the seventeenth episode of Pokémon Generations, where she acts from inside the Expansion Suit.
  • What does Emma do in the manga?
She first battles for Team Flare as Essentia, then goes with X to the underground base in Geosenge Town, where she helps free AZ.

In short

Emma holds a special place in Kalos: she is one of the region's few standout characters to come from the bottom, with no family, no money and no ability to read. The game gives her neither a heroic destiny nor a revelation about her lineage; it gives her a roof, a job and a suit of armor whose controls she never asked for. Yet she ends up at the head of the agency that took her in, with an Espurr that no Poké Ball has ever held.
