Chairperson Erma: The Founder Who Coined the Word Ranger
Share
1877 words | Reading time: 9 minutes
The word "Ranger" came from her pen. Erma runs the Ranger Union from the control room at its headquarters, with three operators relaying for her, and never appears in the field. Yet she founded the institution herself, while still young, alongside two friends who would go on to build a school and a tool, respectively. Appointing Top Rangers, awarding ranks, assigning missions: it all goes back up to her floor.

Three Children, Three Dreams, Three Institutions
Erma didn't inherit her seat. She created the Ranger Union herself, while she was still young, and has run it ever since. The distinction matters: the organization and the person who chairs it share exactly the same origin, which is rare for an institution of this size.
She didn't do it alone. Professor Hastings and Principal Lamont grew up alongside her, and each of the three built one piece of the same whole: the Union for her, the Ranger School for Lamont, the Capture Styler for Hastings. An institution, a school, a tool.
Diary pages preserve the traces of these teenage projects. In them, Lamont describes an education system devoted to Pokémon and dreams of a school dedicated to them; Hastings announces that he's close to his goal of conveying human feelings to Pokémon. Erma, for her part, wants to actively protect Pokémon and their natural habitat, and immediately draws an administrative conclusion from it: she'll need to found an official organization.
She Set the Vocabulary of the Job
The name comes to her all at once, and she immediately runs it by her two friends. A "Pokémon Ranger" is someone who captures peacefully, for the benefit of Pokémon, nature and people. So the word comes before the organization, and the organization inherits it: it will be the Ranger Union.
She applies this knack for the right name to others, too. Hastings wanted to call his capture device "The Capture Loopy-Looper"; she replies that they can surely do better, and the device goes down in history as the Capture Styler. She also points out in passing that after so many sleepless nights, he's mangling his own signature at the bottom of his messages, and advises him to go get some sleep.
Writing is no mere side note for her. A collection of poems in her own hand, titled "Odes aux Pokémon" in the French version, can be read at the Ranger School: so the text circulates right where future agents are trained, alongside their manuals.
Leading from the Control Room
Her post is fixed. She runs the headquarters control room, from which she follows every Ranger on a mission, backed by three operators she ranks as Top Operators — while admitting they tend to chat too much. Rhythmi is one of them.
The network doesn't stop at her floor. She puts the Vientown Ranger Base and the Union on the same goal, keeping the peace in Almia, and relies on the service records that Barlow sends up to her about the Area Rangers.
When the crisis worsens, she thinks in terms of deploying her forces rather than heroics. Area Rangers handle rescuing Pokémon in danger; Top Rangers, the search for the colored stones: she openly keeps some agents on the sidelines, on the grounds that sending everyone on the same operation would turn into internal competition. The rest of the time, she has them patrol among the locals to address their concerns, and asks for a report when they get back.
Appointing Top Rangers, Handing Over the Fine Styler
Promotion goes through her. Erma is the one who appoints Top Rangers and gives them the Fine Styler, an upgraded version of the tool with a charge function. So the title is anything but honorary: it changes the equipment of whoever receives it.
The corps is deliberately small. There are only twelve Top Rangers in the world, and Erma manages each new entry one by one: she welcomes an eleventh member, then a twelfth whose arrival brings the number of Top Rangers based in Almia to four.
What she grants them next is unusual for an institution. A Top Ranger assigns their own missions and answers to no boss — she puts it bluntly, refers them back to their own experience and instinct, and simply reminds them that they can consult one another. Yet she does evaluate them: a call for help from one of their own turns out to be a field test set up by the Union, and progress is then measured in Ranger Ranks that she awards herself.

The Almia Crisis, Run from an Office
The threat has a name. Team Dim Sun is seizing control of Pokémon and threatening Almia's peace, which Erma tells newcomers without making a drama of it: these people don't scare her. What she reminds them of comes down to three things — the region's people, its environment and its Pokémon.
The investigation moves forward one object at a time. Dark stones found in the Gigaremos put the Union on the trail of large colored crystals: the Red Gem deep inside Boyleland Volcano, then the Yellow Gem buried in Hippowdon Temple, the source of the small stones that the legends of the Haruba Desert call the Tears of Princes. Erma has the Blue Gem tested on the headquarters roof, with a machine to back it up.
The revelation comes in the research room: Altru Tower itself is the Incredible Machine, up and running by the very next day. Erma launches the assault under the name Operation Brighton, against a Shadow Crystal that a protective field makes impossible to approach from the air. Her launch speech mentions neither tactics nor weaponry: it lists the operators, the sleep-deprived research team, the two Top Rangers still up in the sky and even the good cheer of Murph, before wrapping up on teamwork.
A Cane, Two Pigtails and a Lot of Humor
You can recognize the character at first glance, by her cane and her two big pigtails. The manga draws her as small, with a kindly smile she never loses; she mainly appears in the second chapter, where she hands her Fine Styler to Kate and approves the investigation into Altru Tower, before reappearing once the mission is accomplished.
She plays with her authority rather than imposing it. Offering a pass to the Capture Arena, she refuses to say where it is: it'll be more fun that way, and her only clue is that the place is somewhere in this world. It's the same playful streak when she suggests calling the long-distance bond a Ranger could keep with a Riolu a "voicemail of the heart," noting that it would have the advantage of never needing a recharge.
Last but not least, she knows how to launch a quest without dressing it up as a mission. A legend of Hippowdon Temple — a Pokémon waiting for the chosen one, three Pokémon to bring to it, a path that opens — leads her to the name Regigigas, and she asks the hero to look into the matter on a personal basis, as a chance to come face to face with a Legendary Pokémon. Once the Browser is complete, she has a mark engraved on the Styler that no one else bears.

In short
Erma captures nothing, battles nothing and hardly ever leaves her control room. Yet she wrote the word, founded the institution and set the rules of the job that shape the entire world of Pokémon Ranger. The day she takes a young Top Ranger to the spot where three children used to meet to talk about their dreams and swear to help one another, she isn't giving a tour of a memory: she's passing on a responsibility, confiding that the future of those dreams now belongs to them.
