Margo: The Mayor's Daughter Who Hid Zeraora in the Mountains

1198 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

A child who steals her own town's symbol to keep the crowd away from a wounded friend. Margo is the daughter of Fula City's mayor and one of the linchpins of the movie The Power of Us. She has no battle team and no Trainer ambitions: what she brings to the story comes down to a debt, a secret and a perfectly reasoned illegal act.

A Cliff, a Boulder, and a Mythical Pokémon

It all starts before the movie's first shot. Margo is out walking in the hills with her two Pokémon friends, a Teddiursa and a Ditto, when a boulder breaks loose from the cliff's edge and threatens to crush her. It's Zeraora, until then unknown to her, who steps in.

The rescue succeeds, but it costs the Mythical Pokémon dearly: Zeraora comes out of it badly injured. So the friendship between the child and the creature isn't born of a capture or a battle, but of an accident and a long, drawn-out recovery.

That role reversal is the key to the character. Margo doesn't become Zeraora's Trainer; she becomes its debtor and its nurse — a relationship the movie builds off-screen, long before viewers ever lay eyes on Fula City.

Fula City's Heaviest Secret

The town regards Zeraora as a curse, and that reputation is enough to doom the injured creature if anyone learns it lives in the mountains. So Margo chooses silence, even with her own father, who happens to run the town.

In practice, her daily life is a back-and-forth: she regularly climbs up to bring berries and Moomoo Milk to her recovering friend. It's while running toward the mountain one morning that she knocks over three boys' lemonade stand, and they get back at her by throwing a lemon — caught in midair by Ash, whose Pikachu then knocks out the gang's Phanpy.

The next day, the balance breaks. Callahan boasts publicly about having spotted a rare Pokémon in the forest, and Margo immediately understands who he's talking about. The rumor is about to send the whole town on Zeraora's trail.

The Theft of the Eternal Flame

Her response is radical and, in its own way, logical: if the Wind Festival stops, the crowd won't go up into the forest. So Margo steals the Eternal Flame, the object the whole Fula City celebration revolves around, and takes it to the abandoned building where Zeraora is hiding.

The plan falls apart on the spot: she runs into Pokémon hunters and tries to send them down a false trail, but Teddiursa and Ditto draw their attention. Zeraora then steps in despite its injury, unable to fight at its usual level.

The arrival of Ash and his group turns the situation around: the hunters' Houndoom and Sneasel fall to Pikachu, and the two men run off. That's when the group discovers who the thief is; Margo apologizes and explains her reasons.

What the Child Brings to the Ending

The rest of the movie strings together the Effect Spore leak from Toren's experiment and the fire that ravages the mountain. Margo stays behind with Ash and Risa to care for Zeraora and the forest Pokémon, instead of fleeing with the townspeople.

Then comes the scene that earns her a place on the poster. Zeraora takes refuge in a stadium, and Ash faces it with Pikachu to try to calm it down — but it's by following Margo's advice that they defuse the Pokémon's hostility toward humans. The movie entrusts its resolution to a child who doesn't fight.

Zeraora shields her one last time from a chunk of building about to come down, then drops from exhaustion; she tends to it with the help of other Pokémon. At the closing ceremony, her father finally announces to the townspeople that Zeraora exists and that Fula City will live in peace with it from now on — the secret turns into a public reconciliation.

In short

In the movie, Margo holds the place usually taken by adults: she's the only one who knows, and the only one who decides. Her theft of the Eternal Flame is presented not as a whim but as the calculation of a child who has no other leverage over her town. The ending proves her right, since it's her words, not a battle, that reconcile Fula City with the Pokémon it believed was cursed.
