It doesn't produce its electricity: it collects it. Zeraora closes out the Alola Pokédex in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: a bipedal Electric-type feline, Mythical, not Legendary, that charges in at lightning speed and tears its opponents apart with high-voltage claws.

Who is Zeraora?

Listed as #807 in the National Pokédex, Zeraora is the "Thunderclap Pokémon" of Generation VII, revealed on Japanese TV on April 9, 2018. It stands 1.5 meters tall, weighs 44.5 kilos and ranks among the Mythical Pokémon.

It looks like a bipedal feline with thick yellow fur, shorter and black on its lower legs, belly, arms and face. Jagged black stripes streak its thighs, and a blue lightning-bolt-shaped whisker marks each cheek.

A very long yellow ponytail runs down its back, and its front paws have four clawed fingers on blue pads, versus three claws on its hind paws. Its silhouette owes a lot to the serval and the toyger, a breed of tiger-striped cat.

Electricity it doesn't make itself

Here's what truly sets it apart: unlike most Pokémon of its type, Zeraora has no organ capable of generating electricity. So it collects and stores current drawn from external sources.

It all comes back out through the pads of its paws : the currents it releases from them create a magnetic field strong enough to make it levitate and propel it as fast as a lightning bolt. Its fur bristles whenever it releases large charges — a feline with all the makings of a Pokémon plush wired for high voltage.

The Pokémon Shield Pokédex sums it up in its own way: when it runs, you see lightning and hear thunder. The Ultra Sun entry adds that a target that dodges its claws still gets zapped.

Type, Ability and Plasma Fists

A pure Electric type, Zeraora has onlya single weakness : Ground, which deals double damage. Conversely, it takes half damage from Flying, Steel and Electric — that's three resistances, and the type chart grants it no immunity.

Its only Ability, with no Hidden Ability, is Volt Absorb : when it's hit by an Electric move, it takes no damage and restores HP instead. In practice, its simple resistance to Electric therefore becomes an immunity that heals it.

Its 600 base stat points are built for speed: 143 Speed, 112 Attack and 102 Special Attack, against 75 Defense. The profile of a lightning-fast attacker, far better at dishing out hits than at taking them.

Its signature move, which only it can learn, is called Plasma Fists (Plasma Punch in French): a physical Electric-type attack with 100 power, 100 accuracy and 15 PP, without the slightest recoil. After dealing damage, it turns all Normal-type moves into Electric-type moves until the end of the turn.

Mega Zeraora: a Mega Evolution from Mega Dimension

First misconception to avoid: Zeraora doesn't evolve, neither from nor into another Pokémon, and a Mega Evolution isn't an evolution. By holding a Zeraorite, it becomes Mega Zeraora for the length of a single battle.

Second misconception to avoid: this Mega Evolution doesn't come from the base game. Revealed on November 19, 2025, it arrived with Mega Dimension, the Pokémon Legends: Z-A expansion released on December 10, 2025, among nineteen new Mega Evolutions.

Mega Zeraora remains pure Electric and keeps its height and weight, but its fur turns black, its legs turn blue, its forehead tuft hardens into a horn and its tail splits in two — a statuette-like look that practically calls for a Pokémon figure. Its Ability, however, isn't documented anywhere to this day.

In terms of numbers, it gains 45 Attack, 45 Special Attack and 10 Speed, for a total of 700 base stat points : the highest total and the highest Attack of any Electric type, and the best Speed of all Mega Pokémon. The Z-A Pokédex puts it in its own way: it stores the energy equivalent of ten lightning strikes.

Distributions: the Mythical you had to earn

Being Mythical, Zeraora isn't something you'll run into in the wild. It first came through event distributions: in Europe, a level 50 Zeraora was available in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon via a serial code handed out in stores between October 1 and November 15, 2018.

The best chapter dates from 2020 and rewarded a collective effort : from June 17 to 28, more than a million Trainers defeated Zeraora in special Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield. Once the goal was reached, a Shiny level 100 Zeraora was given away via Pokémon HOME starting June 29.

Since Mega Dimension, it can finally be caught in-game: a single level 85 Zeraora awaits in Hyperspace Lumiose, where a Rogue Mega Zeraora also hands over the Zeraorite. There, it holds the very last slot in the local Pokédex, just as it does in Alola's.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Zeraora Legendary or Mythical?
Mythical, not Legendary. In fact, it's the only Mythical Electric-type Pokémon, aside from Arceus when it holds a Zap Plate. It takes the last slot in the Alola Pokédex in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and in the Hyperspace Pokédex in the Mega Dimension expansion.
  • Does Zeraora evolve?
No. Zeraora has no evolution and doesn't evolve from any Pokémon: its evolutionary line consists of Zeraora alone. Its only transformation is Mega Evolution into Mega Zeraora, triggered by having it hold a Zeraorite. That isn't an evolution: it only lasts for one battle, after which it goes back to being Zeraora.
  • Does Mega Zeraora exist, and in which game?
Yes, and this is the point not to get mixed up: Mega Zeraora wasn't introduced by the base game, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, but by its paid expansion, Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Mega Dimension, released on December 10, 2025, which adds nineteen new Mega Evolutions. It remains a pure Electric type, keeps its 1.5 meters and 44.5 kilos, and has 88 HP, 157 Attack, 75 Defense, 147 Special Attack, 80 Special Defense and 153 Speed, for 700 base stat points. Its Ability hasn't been documented anywhere so far.
  • What are Zeraora's weaknesses?
Just one: Ground, which deals double damage, since Zeraora is a pure Electric type. It halves damage from Flying, Steel and Electric, and has no type immunity. Its Volt Absorb Ability changes the picture for Electric, though: instead of taking reduced damage, it takes none at all and restores HP.
  • What is Zeraora's Ability?
Volt Absorb, and it's its only Ability: it has no Hidden Ability. When it's hit by an Electric-type move, it takes no damage and restores HP instead. It shares this Ability with Jolteon, Chinchou, Minun and Pachirisu, among others.
  • How do you get Zeraora?
Through distributions, first of all. In Europe, a level 50 Zeraora was given away in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon via a serial code handed out in stores between October 1 and November 15, 2018. In 2020, a level 100 Shiny Zeraora rewarded a community challenge: more than a million Trainers defeated Zeraora in special Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield from June 17 to 28, and the gift was distributed via Pokémon HOME starting June 29. Since the Mega Dimension expansion, a single level 85 Zeraora can be caught directly in the game, in Hyperspace Lumiose.

In short

More electricity thief than producer, a Mythical you won't just stumble upon, a feline faster than lightning: Zeraora racks up one-of-a-kind distinctions. And its Mega Evolution didn't arrive with Z-A, but with Mega Dimension.
