She's the heroine whose adventure puts the very job of being a Trainer on trial. Hilda is the female playable character of Pokémon Black and White, a fourteen-year-old who sets out from a country village with a brand-new Pokédex. The story doesn't pit her against a gang of thieves, but against a movement demanding the liberation of Pokémon and an opponent convinced she's wrong to catch them. Out of that face-off emerges one of the region's two founding dragons.

Fourteen, a Pokédex and a Start in Nuvema Town
Hilda grows up in Nuvema Town, a small town tucked away in southeastern Unova, with two neighbors her own age: Bianca and Cheren are her childhood friends, and the trio leaves town on the same day. It's Professor Juniper who gives all three of them a Pokédex and a first partner, kicking off their journey around the region.
That partner isn't set in stone: the player chooses between Snivy, Tepig and Oshawott, covering the usual three types: Grass, Fire and Water. The rest of her team comes together along the way, notably with a fossil Pokémon found at the Relic Castle and then revived at the Nacrene City museum, and a Larvesta Egg picked up on Route 18.
Her look is recognizable from three elements: a white cap with a crimson visor, a long brown ponytail and a shoulder bag in the same shade of red. On her left wrist she wears a red Xtransceiver, later joined by the C-Gear that Fennel gives her when she passes through Striaton City.
One detail of her house is worth a closer look: the TV in her bedroom is a gift from her father, and it's the only time the game ever mentions the player character's father. Choosing Hilda also has a direct consequence for her male counterpart: Hilbert then disappears from the story and is relegated to the Battle Subway.
Team Plasma, N and Unova's Two Dragons
Hilda's opponent is no ordinary gang. The Team Plasma campaigns for every Pokémon to be set free, with no exceptions and no conditions, which turns every one of the heroine's catches into an argument against her. That's what sets her journey apart from those of the protagonists who came before her.
The spokesman for this cause is N, an enigmatic young man who singles Hilda out as his chosen opponent. Their clash quickly goes beyond the bounds of a sporting battle: it involves the two Legendary dragons to which, according to local tradition, the region owes its very existence.
The outcome of this showdown is built into the game's title. Hilda is recognized by Reshiram in the Black version, and by Zekrom in the White version, and it's in N's Castle that this dragon joins her team. She thus becomes the chosen one of the Legendary opposite her rival's.

Gone for Good: What's Left of Her After Unova
When she isn't the player character, Hilda is recycled as a teammate. In the Battle Subway's Multi Trains, she shows up with two Pokémon drawn at random from a pool that depends on the style you ask for — offensive, defensive or balanced. Their IVs are maxed out in every stat, and their 510 EVs are split evenly between two or three of them.
In Black 2 and White 2, she no longer appears: all you find are traces of her passing, a Prop Case left behind at the Musical Theater, a few lines from N. At home, her mother imagines for a moment that her daughter has come back, and the Memory Link remains the only channel through which her name is ever spoken: the journey of Team Plasma's former adversary is still going on.
And yet a return almost happened. The internal data of these sequels contains unused dialogue that was meant to bring Hilda and Hilbert back as opponents in the Pokémon World Tournament. Translated into several languages, it was wiped in Japanese, Korean and — with one exception — German; the French version kept it, with the spelling "Ludwina".
The mobile game gave her a second career starting September 30, 2019. She has five outfits there, each with its own partners: Tepig, destined to become Emboar, in her canon version, but also Leafeon, a Tornadus in its Incarnate Forme, a Mienfoo reserved for Trainers who are very close to her, a Diancie that can Mega Evolve, a Shiny Grapploct for summer, Victini, and then Iron Leaves. She holds down the Battle Subway there and explains that she never met N during the Black and White storyline.
The Heroes' Duel in Pokémon Evolutions
The Pokémon Evolutions series of animated shorts devotes an episode to her, in which she shares top billing. Flashbacks show her in Accumula Town, her Tepig in her arms, as Cheren calls out to her just as Ghetsis rallies the crowd against Trainers. While dozens of onlookers listen, her Pokémon munches on an Oran Berry — and this little scene catches the eye of an onlooker named N.
The story's present is much darker: the Pokémon League has fallen, and Team Plasma's castle has risen all around it. Alone in the keep, Hilda listens as Ghetsis lays out the details of his scheme. She doesn't argue: she pulls the Light Stone, Reshiram's vessel, out of her bag, leaves the schemer standing there and climbs up toward the throne.
N is waiting for her there and comes down to meet her, to start the duel between the chosen ones. Zekrom answers his call by bursting through the wall, its landing sending out an electrically charged shockwave. The short ends there, on the heroine's sweat-covered face: the outcome of the battle is never shown.

A Name Left to the Player, and Echoes Everywhere Else
Hilda and Hilbert usher in a small interface revolution: they're the first playable characters in the main series for whom the game suggests no name at all, even if the player moves past the naming screen without entering anything. The only constraint is technical, seven characters at most, and the name the community has settled on is the one she bears as an NPC when you play as Hilbert.
Her age shifted during production. The May 2010 issue of CoroCoro Comic announced heroes older than their predecessors without giving a number; Toshinobu Matsumiya, who wrote the story and dialogue, explained to Famitsu that the team first aimed for sixteen before bringing it back down to fourteen. The character keeps a trace of that hesitation in her look: a teenager who's already independent.
The nicknames, for their part, multiplied before the game was even released. Fan communities call her "White," a name that had already appeared in promotional material for Black and White; the English demo used "Whitlea," and English-language screenshots from before the launch showed "Shiro." Notably, the two heroes' official names derive, in every language, from the vocabulary of war and combat.
She has also found her way into several corners of the franchise. In Pokémon X and Y, the Lumiose Museum displays a painting based on the artwork of her riding a Battle Subway train with Hilbert; an alternate costume for the female Pokémon Trainer in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate borrows the colors of her outfit; and the trading card game welcomed her in the White Flare expansion, released in France on July 18, 2025. Her manga counterpart is named White and dreams of breaking into show business, to the point of long overlooking her Pokémon's taste for battle.

Who is Hilda in Pokémon?
She's the female character you can play as in Pokémon Black and White. Fourteen years old and from Nuvema Town, she takes on Team Plasma and becomes the chosen one of one of Unova's two Legendary dragons. -
What is Hilda's first Pokémon?
It's up to the player: Professor Juniper offers Snivy, Tepig or Oshawott. In other media, Tepig is the one by her side, both in the Pokémon Evolutions short and in her default outfit on mobile. -
Why doesn't Hilda have a default name?
She and Hilbert are the first playable heroes in the main series for whom no name is suggested at the start, even if you skip past the naming screen. Only a seven-character limit applies, and her canon name is the one she goes by as an NPC when you play as Hilbert. -
What happens to Hilda in Black 2 and White 2?
She doesn't appear in them. The player only finds clues that she passed through, like a Prop Case left behind at the Musical Theater and what N says, while her mother is still waiting for her to come home. A return at the Pokémon World Tournament was considered, but the corresponding dialogue went unused. -
What role does Hilda play in Pokémon Evolutions?
She faces Ghetsis and then N in Team Plasma's castle. She takes out the Light Stone, Reshiram's vessel, before N calls Zekrom; the short ends without showing the outcome of the duel.
In short
Hilda holds a unique place among the series' protagonists: her adventure isn't just about filling a Pokédex, it asks the player to justify what they do with them. Team Plasma confronts her with an ideology, N confronts her with a dragon, and the game lets her answer with the other one. After Unova, she never really comes back — a mother waiting for her, a forgotten case and dialogue that was never used stand in for the rest of her story.
