Goone: The Bodyguard Keeping the Kodai Network's Secrets

981 words | Reading time: 4 minutes

An antagonist doesn't always need a plan: all he has to do is obey. Goone ranks second in the villain hierarchy of the anime's thirteenth movie, the one centered on Zoroark. A corporate employee and his CEO's bodyguard, he has no ambition of his own and no cause to argue for: just one order, to make sure nothing gets in the way of his boss's research.

A Kodai Network Employee Before He's a Villain

Before he's an opponent, Goone is an employee. He works for the Kodai Network Group, a multinational corporation, and that affiliation explains everything he does on screen: he never acts on his own behalf.

His position is twofold. He is both the right-hand man of Grings Kodai, the group's CEO, and his bodyguard: the trusted confidant and the wall, rolled into one person.

His mission comes down to a single order: make sure nothing disturbs his boss while Kodai carries out secret research in Crown City on what the movie calls the Time Ripple. Goone doesn't design the plan, he clears the obstacles from its path.

Scizor and Ninjask, Two Bug-Types Built for Interception

The character's profile singles out Scizor as his favorite Pokémon. The choice suits the job: a steel-clad Bug-type made to cut things short, not to go the distance.

The second name linked to him is Ninjask. Another Bug-type, whose main selling point is pure speed rather than durability.

Together, the pair sketches a profile that fits the job. No type coverage, no tournament team: two speed specialists, the very quality you'd expect from a bodyguard whose job is to be first on the scene of any problem.

A Swift Defeat Against Zoroark

Goone only steps out of the background in the final act, when he takes on Dawn and Brock. It's his only battle in person, since his Scizor and Ninjask had already acted on his behalf earlier in the movie, and it comes when the plot is already reaching its turning point.

The fight is cut short: a Zoroark out to settle her own score ambushes him and beats him without breaking a sweat. The movie grants him neither a comeback nor a second chance.

The ending, for its part, is explicit. He and Kodai are arrested and sent to prison for their crimes: the story takes the trouble to say so, instead of letting its villains simply slip out of frame. Our feature on the movie Zoroark: Master of Illusions puts the sequence back into the context of its plot.

The Manga and Behind the Scenes

The manga adaptation of the thirteenth movie brings him back unchanged: he plays the same role of secondary antagonist there. No alternate version, no reinterpretation of a character who exists only in relation to his boss.

Behind the scenes, Goone shares his Japanese and English voice actors with Newton Graceland. His name, meanwhile, changes from country to country: Goone in German, English and Spanish, Gozzo in Italian. The French version went its own way with "Gory".

In short

Goone has neither a plan nor convictions: he is the tool a CEO uses to sweep aside whatever bothers him. The movie keeps him in that place to the very end, without offering him a twist or even a battle that lasts. His final appearance reads like a police report: arrested and imprisoned, alongside his boss.
