Gaeric: The Warden Who Didn't Want His Lord Calmed

1589 words | Reading time: 7 minutes
Gaeric starts out by turning down the mission he's handed. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the Pearl Clan has appointed him to watch over a thirty-meter noble Avalugg, and he sees no reason to quell a king who, as far as he's concerned, harms no one. It takes an objection from Irida, a battle he demands and loses, and then an Eternal Ice brought down from the top of the glacier before he shifts his position — without ever changing his mind.

Chosen by His Own People to Guard a Thirty-Meter King
Gaeric hails from Hisui and belongs to the Pearl Clan, where titles aren't inherited: the villagers themselves choose the wardens. He watches over a thirty-meter noble Avalugg, stationed at the Icepeak Arena in the heart of the Alabaster Icelands.
The job goes well beyond standing guard. Gaeric answers for the noble, for the territory it lives in and for what goes into its stomach: keeping it fed is part of the job description just as much as protecting it, which makes him as much a steward as a bodyguard.
Then there's the conviction that explains everything else. He loves his clan and believes wholeheartedly in Almighty Sinnoh; it's that faith, not any kind of bad temper, that makes him wary of any alliance with the Diamond Clan and the Galaxy Team.
Squats, Swordcaps and a Summit Missed by Two Meters
The character has an obsession he makes no secret of. He drops into squats whenever there's a lull and supplements his training with Swordcaps, which he eats with the stated goal of bulking up.
This habit stems from one specific failure. He tried to reach the top of Avalugg's Legacy using nothing but the strength of his arms and gave up two meters short of the goal; when the player meets him there later, he has only just made it and doesn't hide how pleased he is.
His strength isn't just a running gag; it serves the story. He jumps down from the glacier in a single leap, immediately warning the player not to try the same, and he crosses Hisui on foot without a second thought whenever an errand calls him elsewhere.
The Warden Who Refused to Quell His Own Noble
The first meeting, at Avalugg's Legacy, goes badly. Gaeric believes there's no reason to quell the noble, since it harms no one, and he talks about it the way a loyal subject talks about a king, not the way an employee talks about a boss: in his eyes, Avalugg is the Lord of the Tundra.
His opposition takes the form of a question rather than a flat refusal. He asks the player what they personally think, not what the Galaxy Team has ordered them to do — a mission order isn't enough of an argument for him; he wants to know what lies behind it.
Irida then shifts the debate: the noble hasn't caused any trouble so far, but its sheer size makes it impossible to predict what would happen if it ran wild, and keeping everyone safe is also part of the clan's duty. Gaeric concedes the point, then insists on testing for himself whether the player is up to the task — and loses the battle he asked for.
The Eternal Ice and the Snow Balms
Beaten, he switches sides without changing his mind on the substance: he acknowledges his opponent's strength and sends them off to fetch an Eternal Ice, the offering meant for the noble. At the top of the glacier, he wonders aloud at how much energy the player is pouring into a cause that isn't even theirs.
He then heads back to the Icepeak Arena to turn the ice into Snow Balms. He was taught the method, and his grip does the rest: the batch is ready in moments, along with a practical tip, since Avalugg hurls blocks of ice that are best dodged.
Once the noble is quelled, his reaction isn't pride but bafflement — he openly wonders whether the player is even human. Irida seizes the moment to voice what he had feared, namely that the clan's devotion to Almighty Sinnoh is wearing thin through contact with outsiders. He hears her out, notes how much she has grown, congratulates the player, and still admits he doesn't know whether it was the right call.

After the Adventure: Stopwatch, Supplies and a Photo
Once the story is over, Gaeric stays at his post and turns it into a service. He offers to battle Avalugg again as many times as you like, times each attempt, heals your team after a loss and rewards the best times with Exp. Candies, with a bonus for anyone who wins without taking a single hit.
You also run into him far from his mountain, running errands. He came down to pick up supplies for the settlement and heard from Calaba about the investigation into the mass outbreaks of Pokémon that occur during rain showers; he then hands over thirty Sticky Globs, which slow down any Pokémon they hit. He bought the recipe at the Craftworks because the people of the settlement had asked him to.
At the photography studio, he offers to freeze the moment alongside his Glalie, a deliberate pun coming from an ice specialist. His lineup is short and perfectly consistent — Froslass, Glalie and Avalugg — three Ice-type Pokémon for a warden who never really leaves the snow.

A Lookalike in Kalos and a Plant Name
The character has an unacknowledged cousin on the other side of the world. Gaeric looks a lot like Wulfric, a Gym Leader in Kalos, and both Trainers field Ice-type teams.
Their names drive the point home, botanically speaking. Both point to plants of the Scrophulariaceae family: Gaeric's Japanese name, Hamarenge, is another name for Lagotis glauca, while Wulfric's, Urup, is the island where that plant was discovered (Gaeric's English name, for its part, echoes the full botanical name, Lagotis glauca Gaertn.). Still, no relation between the two has ever been officially confirmed.

In short
Gaeric holds a post nobody forced on him: his own people chose him, and it's to them that he answers. He lifts weights, eats Swordcaps, takes on a glacier head-on and loses a battle he demanded himself — before making the Snow Balms that will calm the very king he was defending. He never said it was a good idea; he just did his job.
