Hexagon Brothers: Cipher's Sextuplets Who Can't Count

1554 words | Reading time: 7 minutes

Six brothers, six colors, six types. Resix, Blusix, Browsix, Yellosix, Purpsix and Greesix are the only set of sextuplets Orre has ever produced, and Cipher uses them as locks: they block doors and town exits. What sets them apart comes down to one habit — they count themselves off out loud every time they show up, and the total is almost always wrong.

Six suits of armor, six colors, six specialties

In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, the six brothers hold the rank of Cipher Peon: field Trainers in Cipher's service, with no other stated role. One uniform detail nonetheless sets them apart from their colleagues — they're the only ones of that rank to wear a white scarf.

The rest comes down to the color of their armor. Each brother wears a color that his name spells out and his Pokémon confirm: Resix leans toward red and Fire, Blusix toward blue and Water, Browsix toward brown and Ground, Yellosix toward yellow and Electric, Purpsix toward purple and Poison, Greesix toward green and Grass.

The color code didn't come out of nowhere. The six shades match those of the basic Energy cards in the Trading Card Game, each one standing for a brother's main type. Browsix is the only exception in the set: on his team, only the Shadow Baltoy has a type that matches his color.

The head count, a gag that never comes out right

Orre has only one family of sextuplets, and the brothers make sure nobody forgets it. Their ritual is to count off out loud, one after another, as a group introduction. It should be trivial; it never is.

The first demonstration takes place at the Cipher Lab, where the welcome given to Michael stops at five. Resix forgets to count himself, concludes that a brother is missing, then moves on as if nothing had happened.

The gag comes back when the hero escapes from the lab with Professor Krane: this time the count climbs to eight, the two fugitives having been added in along the way, and the brothers conclude that they've been infiltrated by spies. Once the story is over, they've counted their way up to nineteen, still with no idea where the problem comes from.

Six Shadow Pokémon and a door to force

At the Cipher Lab, the sextuplets are more than set dressing. Each one holds a Shadow Pokémon and the group blocks the building's entrance; beating just one of them, though, is enough for all of them to step aside.

The lineup follows the color code: Houndour for Resix, Spheal for Blusix, Baltoy for Browsix, Mareep for Yellosix, Gulpin for Purpsix and Seedot for Greesix. These six Shadow Pokémon reach level 17, while the rest of the teams stay very low — Blusix, for example, opens with a Horsea at level 11, and Greesix fields a level 9 Shroomish.

The game even plans ahead for what comes next. Five of the six brothers keep a substitute in reserve to fill the gap left by their Shadow Pokémon once it has been snagged: Numel for Resix, Beldum for Blusix, Slakoth for Browsix, Magnemite for Yellosix and Zubat for Purpsix. Greesix goes his own way with five Pokémon at all times, his Seedot joining them for as long as it hasn't changed hands.

Phenac City: six fake Justys posted at the crossroads

The sextuplets resurface during the invasion of Phenac City, the operation in which Cipher swaps its own people in for the city's residents. All six brothers adopt the same disguise there, that of a certain Justy, which makes for a squad of perfectly identical lookalikes.

They count off once again in front of the Pre Gym — backward, for a change — then spread out to every corner of the city: Resix at the east exit, Blusix at the south exit, Greesix at the west exit, Purpsix in front of the Pre Gym, Browsix and Yellosix at the Mayor's House. Those two spend the scene squabbling over the spot, on the grounds that two Justy side by side won't fool anyone.

Each brother you take out leaves a Battle CD behind, which turns the invasion into a collection run as much as a string of battles. A detail for Orre regulars: the posts held by Blusix, Resix and Greesix are exactly the ones held by Bluno, Rosso and Verde in Pokémon Colosseum.

The rematch: level 50 and endless battles

Once Citadark Isle has been visited, the Hexagon Brothers return to the Cipher Lab with whatever Shadow Pokémon they have left. The setting is the same, except that this time nothing suggests they're still blocking the lab's entrance.

The contrast with that first visit is stark. All their teams have moved up to level 50 and are heavily evolved — Camerupt for Resix, Kingdra and Metagross for Blusix, Slaking for Browsix, Lanturn and Magneton for Yellosix, Muk and Golbat for Purpsix, Cacturne, Forretress and Breloom for Greesix. Each win is worth ₽2,000.

These rematches can be replayed as many times as you like and, above all, they outlast the end of the story: no other Cipher Peon can still be battled once the story is over. By then the model is hard to miss — six coordinated colors, a group ritual, a defeat animation unique to Resix, Browsix and Purpsix: the Hexagon Brothers clearly owe a lot to Super Sentai.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who are the Hexagon Brothers?
Six sextuplets in Cipher's service in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. Resix, Blusix, Browsix, Yellosix, Purpsix and Greesix hold the rank of Cipher Peon and can be recognized by their white scarves and the color of their armor.
  • Why do the Hexagon Brothers keep counting themselves?
It's their sibling ritual, and it fails every single time. At the Cipher Lab, Resix leaves himself out of the count twice and thinks a brother is missing; on the way out of the lab, the two fugitives get counted by mistake and the total climbs to eight.
  • Which Shadow Pokémon do the Hexagon Brothers have?
One each: Houndour for Resix, Spheal for Blusix, Baltoy for Browsix, Mareep for Yellosix, Gulpin for Purpsix and Seedot for Greesix. Five of them keep a substitute in reserve to round out the team once the Shadow Pokémon has been snagged; Greesix always keeps five Pokémon.
  • Where can you find the Hexagon Brothers in Phenac City?
Disguised as Justy and spread across the city: Resix at the east exit, Blusix at the south exit, Greesix at the west exit, Purpsix in front of the Pre Gym, Browsix and Yellosix at the Mayor's House. Each one leaves a Battle CD once defeated.
  • Can you battle the Hexagon Brothers after beating the game?
Yes, and they're the only Cipher Peons you can. After you visit Citadark Isle, they return to their post at the Cipher Lab with level 50 teams, and you can replay the battles as many times as you like.

In short

The Hexagon Brothers boil down to one simple idea: six interchangeable underlings that the game makes memorable by making them ridiculous. Cipher uses them as locks, first outside the Cipher Lab and then in the streets of Phenac City, while they spend their time miscounting themselves. Yet they're the only Cipher Peons you can still battle once the credits have rolled, at level 50 and with no limit on rematches.
