Griselle: The Nouveau Café Waitress Who Never Forgave AZ

1314 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

She serves coffee by day, and the rest of the time she bides her time. Griselle works the floor of a Nouveau Café in Lumiose City, but that's only a front: she belongs to Team Flare Nouveau, the group re-formed by Grisham with the former Grunts nobody wanted anymore. The series has written plenty about criminal organizations; it rarely writes about what becomes of their foot soldiers once the boss has fallen.

A True Believer, Before Everything Fell Apart

Griselle is from Kalos and served the original Team Flare, the one led by Lysandre. She sincerely believed in its stated goal: a more beautiful world, where people would support one another. Her profile stresses this point, and it's what makes the rest of her story make sense.

That project wasn't betrayed in secret: it was destroyed in public, the day Lysandre unleashed the ultimate weapon. That event takes place five years before the game's story, which gives the character half a decade of life in the aftermath.

Society's punishment made no distinction between the people in charge and the underlings. Every member of the group became an outcast, branded a criminal for the sole reason of having been tied to Lysandre — including those who had never decided much of anything.

From Abandoned Labs to a Re-formed Organization

With no jobs and no reputation left, the former Grunts rallied behind Grisham, one of their own. So their leadership doesn't come from some strategist brought in from outside, but from someone who rose from the same ranks as Griselle.

The group settles into the deserted Lysandre Labs and gets its hands on archives there: files on the ultimate weapon, on its designer AZ, and on a second machine hidden at the top of Prism Tower.

Out of those readings, Team Flare Nouveau is born, under Grisham's command. The organization sets itself three goals: peace, better living conditions, and clearing the name it bears — an agenda that's as much about rehabilitation as conquest.

The Anger She Doesn't Say Out Loud

This is where Griselle stands apart from her comrades. Her profile describes her as the most vehement member of the group when it comes to AZ: just hearing his name is enough to send her into a rage, no further context needed.

The view she holds is radical: as she sees it, the weapon's designer is responsible for everything, right down to Lysandre's descent into madness. That conviction rests on documents found in an empty building, not on a confession — the game presents it as a certainty she has arrived at, not as an established fact.

Nouveau Café: A Front Served by the Cup

To disappear from public view, Team Flare Nouveau set up Nouveau Cafés. The cover they chose isn't a hideout but a business open to the public, which means rubbing shoulders every single day with the society that rejected its members.

Griselle works there as a waitress, at the location a stone's throw from Prism Tower — in other words, right at the foot of the building where the archives place the second machine.

That detail says everything about the character: the woman taking orders on the floor is also the one keeping watch over the group's objective. The game doesn't need to spell it out; the geography does it for it.

Where to Meet Griselle, Quick Ball in Hand

You battle her for the first time during the main mission "Reaching Rank A", in front of Lysandre Café. So the encounter is scripted: it happens as part of the story's progression, not by chance around some corner.

The Infinite Z-A Royale then puts her back in your path very early on, as the opponent in the second reward match. Then her status changes: from the twenty-first match onward, she joins the pool of randomly drawn opponents and can pop up again at any round.

One last Trainer trait, this one purely mechanical: she keeps her Pokémon in Quick Balls. Her infobox also gives her a favorite, Pyroar, which she Mega Evolves into Mega Pyroar to round out a team made up of Talonflame, Camerupt, Aerodactyl and Metagross.

In short

Griselle is interesting less for what she does than for what she represents: what happens to the foot soldiers after the boss falls. The series usually dismisses its Grunts when the credits roll; this one spent five years carrying someone else's blame, then chose to regroup rather than disappear. Her anger at AZ drives a character who refuses to be a victim, even if it means naming a culprit on the strength of papers picked up in an empty lab.
