Amanita in Pokémon Adventures

Amanita: Unova's PC Box Manager Who Gives You an Eevee

1277 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

Her name appears exactly where the game used to show an anonymous placeholder. Amanita is the person in charge of the Pokémon Storage System in the Unova region, in the fifth generation: the Boxes on Pokémon Center PCs are her responsibility. A single conversation is all it takes for her to put her name on the tool, and a full run to the Hall of Fame for her to turn it into a gift.

The name that replaces the placeholder

Until the player has met her, the Pokémon Center PC goes by an anonymous label: "Someone's PC" (in the French version, "PC de ???"). Simply meeting her is enough to change the label, and the anonymous "Someone" gives way to Amanita's name. The fifth generation thus turns a hallway introduction into a small interface event.

You first find her upstairs in the second building at the entrance to Striaton City. In the sequel to the Unova adventure, she has left the city for Castelia City, on the third floor of the building across from the Gym — a rare move for a service character, and one that forces the player to track her down somewhere else.

She looks like a School Kid, one of the most ordinary Trainer classes in the game. Nothing visually sets her apart from a background extra, even though she holds a post first created by Bill and handed down region after region, all the way to Cassius in Kalos.

What she actually explains to the player

Amanita doesn't just lend her name to the menu: she explains in detail how storage works. Each Box holds up to thirty captured Pokémon, and you start out with only eight of them. Their number grows as you deposit creatures, so capacity keeps pace with your progress through the game instead of being handed over all at once.

She then introduces the Battle Box, a separate reserve where you register one to six Pokémon you regularly use in battle. The point is purely practical: in a battle over infrared connection, the player can bring this selection instead of the party they carry with them.

The third topic in her repertoire is the Pal Pad, and she gives two ways to use it. Either you enter the code a friend gives you into the Pal Pad stored in the Key Items pocket of the Bag, or you go through the C-Gear's infrared connection. Her lines tie the character to a specific era of online play: the days of the console's Wi-Fi service.

The Eevee after the Hall of Fame

Once the Pokémon League has been defeated and your place in the Hall of Fame secured, the conversation takes a different turn. Amanita starts by asking the player what they think of how easy the Boxes are to use — a design question, asked by the person in charge of them, before she even gets to the gift.

She then offers an Eevee, explaining that she already has plenty of them and that a friend from Kanto gave it to her. The gift comes down to a personal reason rather than a story reward, and along the way she points out that the species stands out for its many evolutionary paths.

If your party is already full, she won't hand it over and sends you back to your Boxes. The gift then turns into a lesson about the system she manages: to receive one more Pokémon, you first have to agree to store one away. Declining isn't final, though, since she invites you to come back later.

🧳 The Pokémon she gives away has its own section: see the collection Eevee.

Fennel's sister, an assistant in the manga

Her infobox gives her a short but decisive family tie: Fennel is her sister. In Black and White, she explicitly thanks the player for helping this sister, which ties the Box manager to a side plot of the region instead of leaving her outside the story.

The manga keeps the same family pecking order. She appears in the eleventh chapter of the Black and White adaptation, as Fennel's assistant in her research on dreams. The medium changes, the position stays the same: Amanita works in the service of a researcher just as, in the games, she works in the service of an infrastructure.

Finally, her names in other languages form a remarkably consistent set: Amanita in English, Trufa in Spanish, Mico in Italian, Rubina in German. Mushroom vocabulary recurs from one language to the next, a theme the French name, Boletta, shares without spelling it out.

In short

Amanita holds one of those posts the player relies on constantly without ever thinking about it: storage. Yet the fifth generation gives her a name displayed on screen, a move between two adventures, a sister named in her profile and a gift that depends on her Boxes being kept in good order. Her whole role comes down to that refusal: no free spot in the party, no Eevee.
