Lisia: Hoenn's Contest Star and Her Altaria

1275 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

She knows what a Trainer is worth before they've entered a single Contest. Lisia is the public face of Hoenn's Pokémon Contests, as the Generation III remakes established her. An Altaria nicknamed "Ali," a Gym Leader uncle and a jealous rival: her profile comes down to a handful of facts, but each one serves the same purpose — making Contests more than a sideshow to the Gym challenge.

Contest Headliner in the Hoenn Remakes

The Hoenn remakes give Lisia a role Contests had never given anyone before: that of headliner. She spots the player at their very first meeting and gives them a Contest costume before they've even set foot on a stage.

Her fame is conveyed through the setting rather than the dialogue: clusters of admirers camp out at the entrance to the Contest Halls. Her Key Stone, meanwhile, is set in a hair accessory called the Mega Tiara: a simple accessory promoted to the rank of game item.

Her performances, and those of the Trainers she takes under her wing, earn her the hostility of a fellow Coordinator: Chaz. Once the player has been crowned in every category at Master Rank, she enters the next Contest at the same time as them — the game then turns the star into an opponent.

Wallace, the Mysterious Uncle Turned Mentor

Her backstory isn't handed to you: you have to earn it. Only after beating her in a Contest does the player hear her mention an uncle she doesn't name, a hook left dangling like a reward for progress.

The uncle in question is Wallace, who runs the Sootopolis City Gym. One more win in the Beauty category, against Wallace and Lisia together, completes the reveal: he's the one who trained her.

Wallace then spells out the exact connection: Lisia is his niece, the daughter of a sister who has since left Hoenn. Family is therefore the only explicit bridge between the Gym circuit and the Contest circuit, two paths the game otherwise keeps carefully apart.

The family tie isn't given away: you have to beat her in a Contest to hear about it.

In the Anime: Master Rank and a Tie with Serena

The Journeys series makes her the most prominent Coordinator in the entire Hoenn region, someone who has reached Master Rank and is treated like an idol by the public. Her relationship with Serena, who has also risen to the top of the Contest scene there, is a genuinely friendly rivalry.

On a visit to Lilycove City, she goes through her usual routine in front of fans and cameras: finding a talent to push onto the stage. Her eye falls on Chloe and her Eevee, and despite the reluctance of the visitor from Kanto, she hands her a Pokéblock Case along with a Contest Pass.

She competes in the Master Rank herself, right after Serena, and strings together moves from her Altaria with a Mega Evolution to rack up points. The Contest ends in a perfect tie between the two women: Lisia warmly congratulates her rival, then suggests they team up as a star duo.

She's seen again later with Serena, May and Max, gathered around a TV for the final pitting Ash against Leon, at the end of the Masters Eight Tournament. Her last appearance places her in the audience, not among the competitors.

The Mobile Game, the Manga, the Cards and a Song

The mobile game added her on October 30, 2020, with two distinct looks. Dressed as in the remakes, she forms a sync pair with an Altaria capable of Mega Evolving; her New Year's variant, labeled "New Year's 2023," shows her with a Shiny Galarian Rapidash, a gift from her fans nicknamed "Dashie," in a group formed with Dawn.

The official description of the first sync pair focuses less on her track record than on her approach: talent, but above all high standards she applies to herself first. On paper, she appears as early as the opening chapter of the manga's Omega Ruby Alpha Sapphire arc.

The trading card game gave her her first illustration in the Celestial Storm expansion of the Sun & Moon series, released in France on August 3, 2018. Finally, she has a musical theme all her own that plays when you run into her, reworked as a J-pop version titled "Appeal☆Love" for the remakes' soundtrack.

In short

Lisia exists to put a face on Pokémon Contests, long an activity with no recognizable champion. The remakes give her everything this circuit was missing: a star, a rival and a lineage, since her mentor is also her uncle and a Gym Leader. The anime takes that logic all the way by having her finish tied for first rather than winning outright — for her, spotting talent matters as much as beating it.
