Share
1403 words | Reading time: 7 minutes
She reads the future by having you slip a hand into one of her bracelets. Olympia is the seventh Gym Leader of the Kalos League, based in Anistar City, where she champions the Psychic type. As much a seer as a Gym Leader, she's one of the few characters in the region whose predictions drive the plot forward instead of just decorating it.

Anistar City, the Seventh Step of the Kalos League
Olympia holds the seventh spot on the Kalos circuit, and her Gym is the Psychic-type one. Trainers who beat it leave with the Psychic Badge, at a point when the player's team is already largely in place.
Her status doesn't stop there: she also holds the title of Marchioness at the Battle Chateau. The games thus give her two separate places in the region, one on the badge trail and the other off it.
A design parallel ties her to other Gym Leaders: like Tate & Liza, she's a Psychic-type specialist holding her region's seventh Gym. The anime carries the resemblance all the way to the format, since their Gym matches are fought as Double Battles.
A Seer by Trade, Written into Her Outfit and Her Name
Few Gym Leaders have a second job this visible. Olympia is a seer, and her readings go through the hands: you slip yours into one of her bracelets, and she draws a future from it.
Her look follows suit: a long cape patterned after the cosmos, and a way of speaking unusual enough to be noted even in the character's official descriptions. The outfit doesn't illustrate the Psychic type; it illustrates the sky.
Her French name, Astera, points the same way: it blends "astre" (French for a star or celestial body) with Asteraceae, the family of flowers that asters belong to, which are often mauve and covered in long, thin petals. A stranger note rounds out the portrait — zero gravity is said to amplify her psychic powers.
Sigilyph, Slowking and Meowstic: The Pokémon We Actually See Her With
The mobile game added her to its cast on August 4, 2023, in her canonical outfit, paired with Sigilyph. The duo comes down to two elements and needs nothing more: a seer and a Psychic-type Pokémon.
In the anime, it's Meowstic that you actually see her command. The recorded moves are split between her two Meowstic: Future Sight, Psyshock, Thunder Wave and Dark Pulse for the female; Light Screen, Psyshock and Helping Hand for the male.
Her two anime Meowstic don't share the same Ability, Keen Eye for the female and Prankster for the male, whereas the one at the Anistar Gym has Infiltrator. A special episode of the XY series goes further: a seer from a very ancient civilization appears in it with her Meowstic, with the same hairstyle and clothes as Olympia, which suggests a direct line of descent.
🔮 Psychic types have their own shelf: see the section dedicated to Pokémon figures.

In the Anime: The One Who Saw the Crisis Coming
She enters the Kalos series by foiling a theft: she stops Team Rocket from stealing the Anistar City sundial. Ash battles her right afterward, in the next episode.
Her real role lies elsewhere. She's the one who announces the crisis brewing in the region, and who places Ash and his friends inside that prediction. In the same sequence, she also sees the future of Ash's Frogadier.
The series credits her with a precedent: she had already predicted the clash between Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre, shown in a special episode, and Kalos had prepared well enough to limit the damage. Later, she brings her vision of the coming catastrophe before Diantha, then joins the other Gym Leaders in the fight against Lysandre.
In the Manga: The Telepath of the Ultimate Weapon Battle
The manga adaptation has her appear alongside Grant and Valerie, before placing her in the battle against the ultimate weapon. Her gifts as a seer carry over from the games as they are, with no reinvention.
Yet her role there runs against the grain of the group. Where the other Gym Leaders work to push back the ultimate weapon, she looks for a way through: using telepathy, she guides Shauna, Tierno and Trevor to a path leading into Team Flare's hideout.
When the ultimate weapon goes off, she protects the group with Valerie and their Pokémon. The character finds her clearest expression here: a Gym Leader who wins by seeing it coming, not by hitting harder.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Where is Olympia's Gym, and which badge does she give out?
In Anistar City, in Kalos. It's the seventh Gym on the circuit, specializing in the Psychic type, and it awards the Psychic Badge to Trainers who beat her. -
Which Pokémon do we actually see with Olympia?
Sigilyph, Slowking and Meowstic, the three Pokémon of her Anistar City Gym. Sigilyph has been her partner in the mobile game since August 4, 2023, Meowstic is the one she uses in the anime, and the manga shows her with Slowking and Meowstic. -
What does Olympia predict in the anime?
The crisis brewing in Kalos, in which Ash and his friends are caught up, as well as the future of Ash's Frogadier. She had also foretold the clash between Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre, which helped Kalos weather the damage better. -
Where does Olympia's French name, Astera, come from?
From two sources woven together: the French word "astre" (a star or celestial body) and Asteraceae, the flower family that includes asters, flowers that are often mauve with long, thin petals. -
Does Olympia have a role in the manga?
Yes, during the battle against the ultimate weapon. Instead of trying to push it back like the other Gym Leaders, she uses telepathy to guide Shauna, Tierno and Trevor to Team Flare's hideout, then protects the group with Valerie when it explodes.
In short
Olympia fills a rare slot in the gallery of Gym Leaders: her power isn't a battle asset, it's a plot device. The anime entrusts her with announcing the Kalos crisis, the manga with finding the path to the enemy hideout, and the games are content to place her seventh in line with the Psychic Badge. She joined the card game with the Generations expansion, released in France on March 19, 2016 — proof enough that a Gym Leader can matter without ever raising her voice.
