A living shield, with a wolf underneath. Zamazenta is the mascot of Pokémon Shield, the "Warrior Pokémon" listed as #889 in the National Pokédex. Known as the "Fighting Master's Shield," it sees its mane harden into golden armor and gains the Steel type the moment it's handed a rusted relic.

Who is Zamazenta?

Zamazenta is a Legendary Pokémon from the eighth generation, introduced alongside the Galar region. In its base form, it stands 2.9 meters tall, weighs 210 kilograms and is a pure Fighting type — those are the figures its fact sheet goes by.

Another wolf-like quadruped, it is bulkier than Zacian, crimson in color, with yellow eyes, a gray muzzle and paws, a dark blue ponytail-like tail and a thick mane that already looks like a shield. In this form, it's the right ear that's torn.

Genderless and unable to breed, it turns into a statue to rest for as long as it needs, without losing its ability to project illusions of itself. The Pokémon Shield Pokédex draws a wistful line from this: "This Pokémon, turned into a statue, stayed petrified for so long that it was nearly forgotten."

Hero of Many Battles and Crowned Shield: two forms, one rusted shield

Like its alter ego, Zamazenta has two forms, and neither of them is an evolution. Its standard form has exactly the same name as that of Zacian, Hero of Many Battles — the other one is called Crowned Shield.

The trigger is a one-of-a-kind item, not to be confused with its rival's: the Rusted Shield. When Zamazenta holds it, it absorbs the metal around it; its mane then hardens into golden armor that protects the whole front of its body, and it gains the Steel type on top of its Fighting type.

Its build, meanwhile, bulks up dramatically: its 210 kilograms become 785 kilograms at the same height, and its base stat total climbs from 660 to 700, almost entirely in Defense and Special Defense. Yet it all remains reversible — take the item away and the Hero of Many Battles form returns. The pose looks superb as a Legendary Pokémon figure.

Be wary of the numbers floating around: in Pokémon Sword and Shield, Crowned Shield had 145 in both Defense and Special Defense, for a total of 720. The ninth generation lowered those two stats to 140 and the total to 700 points, exactly like Zacian.

Types, matchups and the Dauntless Shield Ability

As a pure Fighting type, Zamazenta fears three types (Flying, Psychic and Fairy), takes half damage from Bug, Rock and Dark, and has no immunity.

In its Crowned Shield form, the Steel type wipes out those three weaknesses in one go, grants immunity to Poison and cuts damage from Bug and Rock to a quarter. The trade-off comes with a nice touch of irony: Fire, Ground and Fighting itself now hit it for double damage.

Its Ability, on the other hand, stays the same from one form to the other: Dauntless Shield, which no other Pokémon has, raises its Defense by one stage when it enters the field. Since the ninth generation, it only activates on its first appearance in battle.

Behemoth Bash, and not a single Mega

Its signature move is called Behemoth Bash and it only exists in the Crowned Shield form, where it replaces Iron Head. A physical Steel-type move, it has 100 power, 100 accuracy and 5 PP: the user turns into a giant shield and charges.

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, it deals double damage to a Dynamaxed target. The irony is worth pointing out: Zamazenta is one of only three Pokémon in those games that can't Dynamax, along with Zacian and Eternatus.

And no, it isn't hiding anything else. Zamazenta does not evolve and isn't evolved from any Pokémon. No Mega Evolution, no regional form, and no Gigantamax form — Hero of Many Battles and Crowned Shield are all it has.

The Darkest Day, the king of the people and the heroes of Galar

Going back 3,000 years, Galar was struck by the Darkest Day: Eternatus was draining the region's energy, the sky filled with thick storm clouds, and Pokémon that had grown gigantic nearly destroyed everything. The Pokémon Sword Pokédex puts it plainly: "In times past, it worked together with a king of the people to save the Galar region. It absorbs metal that it then uses in battle."

The tapestries in Hammerlocke show two young heroes wielding a sword and a shield; the statues in Stow-on-Side set the record straight: those weapons were Pokémon. Zamazenta and Zacian, the heroes of Galar, are described sometimes as siblings, sometimes as rivals.

Together, they overcame Eternatus, even in its Eternamax form, then fell asleep in the Slumbering Weald. A bodyguard like that has well earned its place among our Pokémon plushies, in a far more cuddly version than the original.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are Zamazenta's two forms?
Hero of Many Battles Zamazenta, the standard form: Fighting type, 2.9 meters tall, 210 kilograms and a base stat total of 660. And Crowned Shield Zamazenta: Fighting and Steel type, the same height but 785 kilograms, with a base stat total of 700. Both keep the "Warrior Pokémon" category and the number 889.
  • How do you get Crowned Shield Zamazenta?
Just have it hold the Rusted Shield. The item makes it absorb the surrounding metal, gives it the Steel type on top of its Fighting type and turns its Iron Head move into Behemoth Bash. The change is reversible: take the Rusted Shield away and Zamazenta returns to its Hero of Many Battles form. You get the Rusted Shield at the sacred altar in the Slumbering Weald in Pokémon Shield, and at an auction in Porto Marinada in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Don't mix them up: it's the Rusted Sword that transforms Zacian.
  • Does Zamazenta evolve?
No. Zamazenta has no evolution and isn't evolved from any Pokémon. The distinction matters: an evolution changes the species and is permanent, whereas switching to the Crowned Shield form is a simple, reversible form change within one and the same species. Zamazenta is also genderless and can't breed.
  • Does Zamazenta have a Mega Evolution or a Gigantamax form?
No, neither one, and no regional form either. The only Mega Evolution from the eighth generation belongs to Falinks, thanks to Falinksite. Zamazenta can't even Dynamax: it's one of only three Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield in that situation, along with Zacian and Eternatus.
  • What are Zamazenta's weaknesses?
It depends on the form. As a pure Fighting type, it takes double damage from Flying, Psychic and Fairy, takes half damage from Bug, Rock and Dark, and has no immunities. As a Fighting and Steel type, the Crowned Shield form loses those three weaknesses but picks up three new ones: Fighting, Fire and Ground. It takes only a quarter of the damage from Bug and Rock, half damage from Normal, Steel, Grass, Ice, Dragon and Dark, and becomes completely immune to Poison.
  • What's the difference between Zacian and Zamazenta?
They're the two heroes of Galar, designed as mirror images. Zacian, #888, is the mascot of Pokémon Sword: a Fairy type with the Intrepid Sword Ability, which raises its Attack, the move Behemoth Blade, and the Rusted Sword to switch to its Crowned Sword form. Zamazenta, #889, is the mascot of Pokémon Shield: a Fighting type with the Dauntless Shield Ability, which raises its Defense, the move Behemoth Bash, and the Rusted Shield to switch to its Crowned Shield form. Both gain the Steel type in their Crowned forms and share the "Warrior Pokémon" category.

In short

A mane that turns into armor, an immunity to Poison as a bonus and an Ability that armors it up the moment it enters battle: Zamazenta is Galar's ultimate bodyguard. And yet, it does not evolve.
