A 290-kilogram bear crowned with a full moon. Ursaluna (called "Ursaking" in French) is the eighth generation's Peat Pokémon: 2.4 meters tall, dark brown fur crusted with mud and, on its head, a yellow circular marking that evokes a moon veiled by two clouds.

Who is Ursaluna?
Listed as #901 in the National Pokédex, Ursaluna arrived with Pokémon Legends: Arceus. It's a brand-new evolution grafted onto a second-generation line, that of Teddiursa and Ursaring, which had gone without a follow-up for more than twenty years.
It's a huge quadrupedal bear with dark brown fur, whose back, tail and legs are caked in light brown mud. The contrast with Ursaring, which tops out at 1.8 meters and 125.8 kilograms, is striking: Ursaluna weighs in at more than double.
It is said to be inspired by the Ussuri brown bear, a species found in Hokkaidō — the region that served as the model for Hisui — and perhaps by Kim-un-kamuy, the god of bears and mountains in Ainu mythology. Its connection to peat is thought to refer to the old coal mines where these bears live.

Evolution: a Peat Block on a full-moon night
The line has three stages. Teddiursa becomes Ursaring at level 30, then Ursaring becomes Ursaluna when exposed to a Peat Block, but only on a night with a full moon. No level requirement, no trade, no friendship: the item and the timing are everything.
The Peat Block is an evolution item exclusive to Pokémon Legends: Arceus. You can dig it up in the Crimson Mirelands or buy it for ₽10,000 from Ginter, of the Ginkgo Guild, who passes it off as a simple lump of coal.
Watch out for a common mix-up: this evolution only exists in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Since the full moon doesn't appear anywhere else, Ursaring can't evolve in Scarlet and Violet. To own a regular Ursaluna there, you have to evolve it in Hisui and then transfer it via Pokémon HOME.
The Bloodmoon form, a one-of-a-kind specimen
Since The Teal Mask expansion for Scarlet and Violet, Ursaluna has had a second form, the Bloodmoon form. It walks on two legs, its fur is lighter, mud covers its back and part of its face, and the marking on its head turns from yellow to red.
It's neither an evolution nor a standard form change. According to Perrin, the photographer, this Ursaluna from Hisui crossed the sea all the way to Kitakami, and its appearance changed as it adapted. It lives in the Timeless Woods and only comes out on foggy nights.
You get it at the end of Perrin's quest: after photographing ten different species in the Timeless Woods, you battle a level 70 Bloodmoon Ursaluna with five times more HP than normal, which can be caught once it's defeated. The specimen is one per save file, always male, and its form can't be changed.
The change runs deep: 2.7 meters and 333 kilograms, and completely redistributed stats. Where the regular Ursaluna hits hard with 140 Attack, Bloodmoon drops to 70 but climbs to 135 Special Attack and 120 Defense. The physical bruiser becomes a special-attack cannon.

Ground and Normal type, Abilities and matchups
Ursaluna is a Ground and Normal type. Four types hit it for double damage: Fighting, Water, Ice and Grass. None hits it for quadruple damage.
Its real strength lies elsewhere. It takes half damage from Poison and Rock, and above all it stacks two immunities — Electric, inherited from Ground, and Ghost, inherited from Normal. The remaining ten types deal normal damage to it.
It can have Guts, which boosts its Attack if it's affected by a status condition, or Bulletproof, which blocks certain projectile moves. Its hidden Ability is Unnerve, which prevents the opponent from eating its Berries. The Bloodmoon form, for its part, has only one Ability, and it's exclusive to that form.
Mind’s Eye, Blood Moon and a nose for treasure
This exclusive Ability is called Mind’s Eye — the holder's accuracy can't be lowered, it ignores the opponent's evasion boosts, and its Normal- and Fighting-type moves can even hit Ghost-type Pokémon. Bloodmoon Ursaluna also has a signature move, Blood Moon, a special Normal-type attack with 140 power that can't be used two turns in a row.
The regular form, on the other hand, has nothing exclusive: its big Ground-type move, Headlong Rush, is also learned by Torterra, Hariyama and Great Tusk. It slams the target with 120 power, but lowers the user's Defense and Special Defense in the process.
Its Hisui Pokédex entry is almost tender: "I believe it was Hisui's swampy terrain that gave Ursaluna its burly physique and newfound capacity to manipulate peat with ease." In the game, it's the ride Pokémon that digs up buried treasure, obtained at Sludge Mound, in the Crimson Mirelands. A bear that has everything it takes to join a collection of Pokémon plushies or figures.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do you evolve Ursaring into Ursaluna?
By using a Peat Block on Ursaring on a full-moon night, in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. The Peat Block can be dug up in the Crimson Mirelands, earned as a request reward, or bought for ₽10,000 from Ginter, of the Ginkgo Guild, in Jubilife Village, where it's passed off as a lump of coal. Ursaring, for its part, evolves from Teddiursa at level 30. -
Can you get Ursaluna in Scarlet and Violet?
Not through evolution. The full-moon phenomenon only exists in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and Ursaring isn't programmed to evolve in Scarlet and Violet. To have a regular Ursaluna there, you have to evolve it in Hisui and then transfer it via Pokémon HOME. The Bloodmoon form, however, can be caught directly in The Teal Mask expansion. -
What is Ursaluna's Bloodmoon form?
A second form introduced with The Teal Mask expansion for Scarlet and Violet, specific to the Kitakami region. It walks on two legs, stands 2.7 meters tall and weighs 333 kilograms, has a red moon marking instead of a yellow one and keeps the Ground and Normal types. It's neither an evolution nor a form change: it's an Ursaluna from Hisui whose appearance changed as it adapted to its new territory. -
How do you get Bloodmoon Ursaluna?
By completing the quest of Perrin the photographer, in Kitakami's Timeless Woods. After photographing ten different Pokémon species from that forest, you can approach and then battle a level 70 Bloodmoon Ursaluna with five times the HP of a normal specimen, and catch it once the battle is over. It's one per save file, always male, and can never be Shiny. -
What are Ursaluna's weaknesses?
As a Ground and Normal type, it takes double damage from Fighting, Water, Ice and Grass, for a total of four weaknesses, and no type hits it for quadruple damage. It takes half damage from Poison and Rock, and it's completely immune to Electric and Ghost. Both forms share exactly the same matchups, since they have the same types. -
Does Ursaluna have a Mega Evolution or a Gigantamax form?
Neither, and no regional form either. Across the entire eighth generation, the only Mega Evolution is Falinks's, triggered by the Falinksite. Ursaluna's only two looks are its regular form and its Bloodmoon form.
In short
One item, one full-moon night, and the Johto bear becomes the colossus of Hisui. Then, centuries later, a lone survivor crosses the sea and returns under a blood-red moon.
