A stone colossus crowned with a blaze. Coalossal (called "Monthracite" in French) completes Rolycoly's line: 2.8 meters, 310.5 kilos and a heap of glowing coal for a mane. In its Gigantamax form, it turns into a furnace more than 40 meters tall.

Who is Coalossal?
Listed as #839 in the National Pokédex, Coalossal is the "Coal Pokémon," the final stage of a family that starts out as a simple pebble on wheels. Its all-black body calls to mind a stone giant as much as a mountain of coal, somewhere between a dinosaur and a slag heap.
Two small arms, two massive legs, large spikes on its shoulders, a pair of menacing eyes and a fiery mouth topped by a heap of burning coal. The Pokémon Shield Pokédex notes that in battle, this heap turns red and gives off sparks that scorch everything around it.
The Pokémon Sword entry stresses the opposite, though: it is peaceful by nature. It only flies into a rage when humans try to plunder its mines — and then it burns everything in its path with flames of 1,500 °C.

Rock and Fire, Steam Engine and tar
Like Carkol, it is a Rock and Fire type. Two types hit it four times as hard (Water and Ground), and two hit it twice as hard (Fighting and Rock): a frankly dangerous matchup chart for such a slow Pokémon.
Its defenses make up for it elsewhere: Fire now deals only a quarter of its usual damage, and Fairy, Ice, Bug, Normal, Poison and Flying are halved, for a total of seven resistances. The remaining seven types, including Steel and Grass, go through unchanged.
Its Abilities are Carkol's rather than those of Rolycoly : Steam Engine, the family signature that raises its Speed by six stages as soon as a Fire- or Water-type move hits it, or Flame Body, which can burn an attacker that makes contact. Flash Fire rounds out the trio as its hidden Ability.
With a base stat total of 510, it relies on its Defense (120) and HP (110), with a Speed of just 30. Its signature move, Tar Shot, which only it can learn, lowers the target's Speed by one stage and makes it weak to Fire.
The Gigantamax form: a 2,000 °C furnace
Some Coalossal can take on a Gigantamax form in battle, for three turns. It then grows to at least 42 meters, its heap of coal becomes wreathed in three red clouds and the front of its body opens up into three gaping holes.
The Pokémon Sword Pokédex sums up the transformation: its body has become an immense furnace, with flames reaching 2,000 °C. The Pokémon Shield entry tells of a legend: it once saved many lives during a cold snap by turning into a giant brazier.
In this form, it gains access to G-Max Volcalith, the game's only Rock-type Gigantamax move. It deals damage, then hurls rocks that hurt non-Rock opponents for one-sixth of their max HP at the end of each turn, for four turns.
To get the Gigantamax Factor, there are two ways: Max Raid Battles in the Wild Area dens and the Crown Tundra's Max Lair, or the Max Soup from the Isle of Armor, cooked up at the Master Dojo with three Max Mushrooms. Coalossal is indeed among the species eligible for this recipe.

Evolution: Carkol at level 34, and no Mega
Coalossal evolves from Carkol at level 34, which itself evolves from Rolycoly at level 18. No item, no trade: two level-ups are all it takes to go from a 12-kilo pebble to a 310.5-kilo colossus.
No Mega Evolution for it, though: in the entire eighth generation, only one Pokémon can Mega Evolve—Falinks, using the Falinksite. Coalossal therefore has only two looks, its normal form and its Gigantamax form, and no regional form.
Gordie's signature Pokémon
In Circhester, home of Galar's sixth Gym, it is the ace of Gordie, the Rock-type specialist Gym Leader and son of Melony. His level-42 Coalossal Gigantamaxes during the Gym battle, and he does it again at Wyndon Stadium and in the Galarian Star Tournament.
Its name blends mont (French for "mountain") and anthracite, the hardest variety of coal — in French, that is, where it's called "Monthracite." In the anime, a Coalossal forced to Gigantamax rampages through the mine where it worked in episode JN043, before being calmed down by Ash Ketchum and Leon. A stature like that calls for Pokémon figures as much as Pokémon plushies.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do you get Coalossal?
By evolving Carkol at level 34, which itself comes from Rolycoly at level 18. No item, trade or special condition is needed. You can also catch it directly in Pokémon Sword and Shield, notably in the Dusty Bowl, at Lake of Outrage and at Giant's Cap, as well as in Max Raid Battles and in the Crown Tundra's Max Lair. -
What is Coalossal's Gigantamax move?
G-Max Volcalith, a Rock-type G-Max move that no other Pokémon can use. It's also the only Rock-type G-Max move in the game. It replaces Coalossal's damaging Rock-type moves when it Gigantamaxes: it deals damage, then hurls rocks that make non-Rock opponents lose one-sixth of their max HP at the end of each turn, for four turns. -
How do you get a Gigantamax Coalossal?
There are two ways. The first is to catch one that already has the Gigantamax Factor, in a Max Raid Battle at a Wild Area den or in the Max Lair of The Crown Tundra expansion. The second is the Max Soup from The Isle of Armor expansion: made at the Master Dojo with three Max Mushrooms, it gives the Gigantamax Factor to eligible species, Coalossal among them. -
What are Coalossal's weaknesses?
As a Rock and Fire type, it takes four times the damage from Water and Ground, and double from Fighting and Rock, for four weaknesses, two of them quadruple. On the other hand, it takes only a quarter of the damage from Fire and halves damage from Fairy, Ice, Bug, Normal, Poison and Flying, giving it seven resistances. The seven remaining types, Steel, Dragon, Grass, Psychic, Ghost, Dark and Electric, deal normal damage to it, and it has no immunities. -
What are Coalossal's Abilities?
Steam Engine or Flame Body, with Flash Fire as its hidden Ability. Steam Engine is the line's signature Ability: when the Pokémon is hit by a Fire- or Water-type move, its Speed rises by six stages, although the damage from the incoming move isn't reduced. Flame Body can burn an attacker that makes contact and makes Eggs hatch faster. These are the same Abilities as Carkol's, but not quite Rolycoly's, which has Heatproof instead of Flame Body. -
Does Coalossal have a Mega Evolution?
No. No member of Rolycoly's line can Mega Evolve, and the only Mega Evolution in the entire eighth generation belongs to Falinks, triggered by the Falinksite. Coalossal has only two looks, its normal form and its Gigantamax form, and it has no regional form either.
In short
Four hundred years of Galar's mines fit into this silhouette: a pebble on wheels turned into a glowing mountain. Peaceful as long as you leave its coal alone, and capable of turning into a 42-meter furnace when it loses its temper.
