Who is Crabominable?

Listed as #740 in the National Pokédex, Crabominable is the seventh generation's "Woolly Crab Pokémon": 1.7 m tall, 180 kg, Fighting and Ice type. To this day, it's the only Pokémon with this dual type.

Its egg-shaped body disappears under white fur, shaggier below its mouth, on its shoulders and near the tips of its pincers. Its light-blue face, its two square teeth and markings that mimic pecs complete the picture: a boxer done up as an abominable snowman.

The Pokémon Sun Pokédex tells its story in two sentences: it dreamed of reaching the summit of a snowy peak, lost its way, then had to evolve to survive the cold and grew a thick coat of fur. So it wasn't a beach it fled from, but a failed climb that transformed it.

Type and abilities

The Fighting and Ice combination gives it six weaknesses — Fire, Fighting, Flying, Psychic, Steel and Fairy — but, surprisingly, it has no quadruple weakness : Rock, super effective against Ice, is halved by its Fighting side and drops back to normal damage.

Only three types deal half damage to it: Ice, Bug and Dark. The other nine hit it normally, and none leaves it unscathed, since Crabominable has no immunity whatsoever.

It keeps the three Abilities of Crabrawler : Hyper Cutter, which prevents opponents from lowering its Attack, and Iron Fist, which powers up its punching moves. Its hidden Ability is still Anger Point : take a critical hit, and its Attack shoots up to the maximum.

Its stats lean heavily to one side: 132 Attack, 97 HP, 77 Defense, 67 Special Defense, 62 Special Attack and only 43 Speed, for 478 points in total. Its go-to move, Ice Hammer, hits with 100 power but costs it Speed.

Mega Crabominable, the surprise of Mega Dimension

Since Mega Dimension, the paid DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A released on December 10, 2025, Crabominable can Mega Evolve into Mega Crabominable using a Crabominablite, provided its Trainer has a Key Stone.

The transformation changes neither its type nor its category: still Fighting and Ice, still the Woolly Crab Pokémon, but it grows to 2.6 m and 252.8 kg. Its hands become blocks of ice bristling with spikes, and it rises up on its two frozen hind legs.

It keeps just one Ability, Iron Fist, and gains a hundred stat points: Attack goes from 132 to 157, Defense from 77 to 122 and Special Defense from 67 to 107, while Speed drops from 43 to 33. Total: 578 points, a figure no other species has, according to Bulbapedia.

Its Pokédex entry doesn't bother with nuance: its pincers, covered in a thick layer of ice, are like fists, and with a single motion it crushes reinforced concrete to bits. As for the Crabominablite, you have to win it in Hyperspace Lumiose by defeating two Rogue Mega Crabominable during side mission 141.

Evolution: the summit first, the Ice Stone later

Crabominable evolves from Crabrawler, through one of the most unusual methods in the series: in the games set in Alola, you have to level up Crabrawler at Mount Lanakila, the region's highest peak, on Ula'ula Island.

No level threshold, no held item, no trade: it's the location that counts. Since Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, an Ice Stone also does the trick, anywhere. Crabominable has no further evolution after that: its Mega is its only other form, and it lasts only for the length of a battle.

Hairy crab, yeti and pincers to go

Its name, the same in French and English, combines crab and abominable snowman, another name for the yeti; the Japanese Kekenkani comes from kegani, a very real hairy crab. The design fittingly blends theErimacrus isenbeckii and the deep-sea yeti crab.

The Pokédex has a lot to say about its pincers: it sometimes detaches them and sends them flying like rockets, they're said to be delicious, and some Trainers head up into the mountains with a Lechonk just to sniff them out.

The anime gave it a great entrance: in episode SL060, Hala's Crabrawler evolves on Mount Lanakila after defeating a Sneasel. Enough to make you want to find it again as Pokémon plushies or as collectible figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does Mega Crabominable really exist, and in which game?
Yes. Mega Crabominable was introduced in Mega Dimension, the paid DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, whose wave with the new Mega Pokémon came out on December 10, 2025. You trigger it in battle by having Crabominable hold a Crabominablite, and the Trainer must have a Key Stone. Like every Mega Evolution, it's temporary and ends when the battle does.
  • What are Mega Crabominable's characteristics?
It keeps the Fighting and Ice types as well as the Woolly Crab Pokémon category, but goes from 1.7 m to 2.6 m and from 180 kg to 252.8 kg. Its only Ability is Iron Fist. Its base stats become 97 HP, 157 Attack, 122 Defense, 62 Special Attack, 107 Special Defense and 33 Speed, for a total of 578: Attack gains 25 points, Defense 45 and Special Defense 40, while Speed loses 10.
  • How do you get the Crabominablite?
You get it in Mega Dimension after defeating the two Rogue Mega Crabominable you face in Hyperspace Lumiose, during side mission 141, titled "UNE BASTON MÉGA-FEROX" in the French version. Rogue Mega Evolution is a phenomenon unique to Pokémon Legends: Z-A that makes wild Pokémon Mega Evolve, with no Trainer or Key Stone; defeating one of them gives you the matching Mega Stone.
  • What are Crabominable's weaknesses?
As a Fighting- and Ice-type, it has six double weaknesses: Fire, Fighting, Flying, Psychic, Steel and Fairy. Contrary to what you might fear for an Ice-type Pokémon, it has no quadruple weakness, because Rock, super effective against Ice, has its damage halved by its Fighting side. It takes only half damage from Ice, Bug and Dark, the other nine types hit it normally, and it has no immunity. Mega Crabominable keeps exactly the same type chart.
  • How do you get Crabominable?
By evolving Crabrawler. In the games set in Alola, you have to level it up while it's at Mount Lanakila, on Ula'ula Island: no minimum level is required, since it's the location that triggers the evolution. Since Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, using an Ice Stone on Crabrawler gives the same result, wherever you are.
  • Why is Crabominable covered in fur?
The Pokémon Sun Pokédex explains it: it dreamed of reaching the summit of a snowy peak but lost its way, and it had to evolve to survive the cold, which gave it a thick coat of fur. This white fur is therefore an adaptation to the freezing cold of the mountains it now lives in, and it goes hand in hand with its ability to concentrate cold in its pincers before striking.

In short

A dream of climbing, a wrong turn and a lifesaving coat of fur: Crabominable was born of an accident along the way. With Mega Dimension, this slow, stubborn bruiser finally becomes a wall that hits back.
