The Digging Duo in Pokémon Sword and Shield

Digging Duo: The Twins Who Dig Up the Wild Area's Treasures

964 words | Reading time: 4 minutes

Two brothers, one shovel each, and a single price: 500 Watts. The Digging Duo are professional excavators set up in the middle of the Wild Area in Galar, where they sell passing Trainers the only service they've mastered: digging. Behind this tiny business lies one of the game's rare services where the player has to choose between two vendors who don't do quite the same thing.

Twins set up at Bridge Field

The Digging Duo are twin brothers from Galar, sons of Digging Pa and Digging Ma. Both do the same job: full-time treasure hunters in the Wild Area. It's the only profession the source credits them with, and it's enough to define the two-person character they form.

Their workstation never moves: Bridge Field, a few steps from the Pokémon Nursery where you leave your Pokémon for breeding. The player first runs into them while exploring the Wild Area, which means very early, before having the money to pay them.

Their look is nothing special: they copy the Hiker model feature for feature. Like any Trainer you meet on the map, they hire out their skills — except that here the skill on sale isn't a battle but a service, a quirk of Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Stamina or skill: two ways to dig

They share the passion, not the talent. One twin has stamina: he digs up more items, but common ones. The other has skill: he takes his time, brings up noticeably rarer finds, and wears out much faster.

The difference isn't hidden in a menu; it's built into the scenery. The skill brother is the one standing closest to the Pokémon Nursery, the stamina brother the one farthest from it. So choosing your supplier simply comes down to walking up to the right one.

A session doesn't always end when you think it will. Every so often, a brother gets a second wind once his dig is over and picks the pickaxe back up — sometimes several times in a row, which turns a fixed expense into a very unpredictable result.

500 Watts a session, and a mandatory save

The price never changes: 500 Watts, whichever brother you ask. Once paid, he digs up randomly drawn items of varying rarity, and keeps going until the player asks him to stop or he stops on his own, worn out.

There's no rule against going again: the player can start as many sessions as they like, with the twin of their choice, as long as they have the Watts for it. When the wallet runs dry, the brothers themselves send Trainers off — and that includes the hero of Galar — to investigate Pokémon Dens and build their Watts back up.

One detail changes your whole relationship with luck: the game saves automatically before each dig, which rules out reloading an old save to try for a better roll. Each brother also keeps track of his record for consecutive digs, the only accolade these two lay claim to.

In short

The Digging Duo have no team, no Gym and no role in the plot: they sell a few shovelfuls for 500 Watts, and that's it. Their appeal lies entirely in the little dilemma they pose: lots of ordinary items, or a few rare ones. Two extras were all it took to turn the Wild Area into a place you keep coming back to spend money, and along the way the card game gave them a life outside Galar.
