Marnie: The Galar Rival with a Whole Team Founded for Her

713 words | Reading time: 3 minutes

An entire organization was set up to cheer her on. Marnie is one of the player's rivals in Galar, a Dark-type specialist and the little sister of Piers. Team Yell, which sabotages the Gym Challenge with air horns and roadblocks, has no agenda other than supporting her — which makes it the most absurd and most endearing organization in the entire series.

One rival among several

Sword and Shield don't settle for a single rival: the player runs into several, and Marnie is the one who brings the darkest counterpoint.

Her specialty is the Dark type, which sets her clearly apart from the general good cheer of the Gym Challenge in Galar.

She fields Morpeko, Scrafty, Toxicroak, Croagunk, Liepard and Grimmsnarl. A team of troublemakers, consistent right down to its look.

Piers, the big brother

Marnie is Piers's little sister, and it's this relationship that explains everything else about the setup.

The sibling bond shows mostly later in the story: after the main adventure, Marnie takes over from Piers as Gym Leader of Spikemuth. Yet that was never the post she was after: what she wants is to bring hope back to Spikemuth, her hometown that is fading into obscurity.

Her ambition is explicit, too: at the time, when Piers wants to make her Spikemuth's Gym Leader, she refuses, because she has her sights set on the Champion title — she only accepts the post once the main story is over.

Team Yell, or the series' most overbearing fan club

Team Yell has no plan for domination, no ideology and no financial ambition. Its one and only agenda is to support Marnie, something no other organization in the franchise has ever attempted.

Yet its methods are those of a classic criminal organization: roadblocks, sabotage of the Gym Challenge, intimidation by noise.

The gap between the agenda and the means is what makes the group so much fun. A fan club that behaves like a gang remains one of Generation VIII's best comedic ideas.

In short

Marnie is the rival the series built in reverse. Where the others want a title for themselves, she wants one for Spikemuth, her dying hometown — and an entire organization sprang up to help her get there, complete with air horns and roadblocks. Team Yell remains the only group in the franchise whose goal fits in a single first name.
