Lizabeth with the troupe's Pokémon

Lizabeth: Last of the People of the Water, Marina Group Star

1272 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

She passes down the history of a people whose writing she can no longer read. Lizabeth appears in the anime's ninth movie, Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, the one starring Manaphy. The headliner of a traveling water-show company, she is also among the last descendants of the People of the Water — and it's this dual status, performer and heir, that puts her at the center of the plot.

The Marina Group, a Family Troupe

Lizabeth is neither a Gym Leader nor a tournament Trainer: she's a stage performer. She's the star of the Marina Group's Pokémon water show, a traveling water-show company well-known enough to have built a loyal following over its tours.

With her, troupe and family are one and the same. She lives in a caravan with her mother Meredith, her father Kyle and her grandfather Shep, and they all put on the same act: the company's humans and Pokémon work together, from town to town, to the rhythm of the shows.

The meeting with Ash's group comes down to chance and thirst. It's the show's water bubbles that catch their attention: Max traces them back to Lizabeth, and Brock recognizes her on the spot, as a longtime fan of her act. She offers the travelers something to drink, and they end up staying with the troupe for several days.

An Heir Who Tells the Story but Can't Read It

The movie doesn't make her a fighter but a keeper of memory. Lizabeth is among the last descendants of the People of the Water, and her family preserves its story: they tell it aloud to their guests, and she's the one again who will explain to the group why Manaphy must be protected, once the Phantom's attack is over.

Her bond with May forms over a troubling detail: the two girls had the same strange dream on the same night. Lizabeth confides it to her, then makes a habit of reassuring her whenever she worries about the Mythical Pokémon — including when Jack Walker asks her to keep her distance from it. She eventually gives her a People of the Water bracelet.

Yet the heritage has a clear limit, and the movie underlines it harshly. Once inside Samiya, the Sea Temple, Lizabeth can't read the inscriptions left by her ancestors: it's the Phantom, the plunderer, who deciphers them and opens the door to the Sea Crown. The memory reached her through speech, not through writing.

At the Submarine's Controls, Twice

When Manaphy goes missing for a long while, she doesn't wait for anyone else to decide for her. Lizabeth takes the submarine's controls herself to go looking for it: the craft is hard to handle, but she keeps it under control and steers it all the way to the Sea Temple, which she enters with Ash's group and Manaphy.

Once there, she stands up to the Phantom head-on. The plundering destroys the temple as it goes, and watching her ancestors' monument crumble hits close to home — without making her lose sight of her priorities.

Her call is that of a troupe leader rather than an adventure-story heroine: she puts her friends' safety ahead of the temple and heads back to the submarine, which she pilots again through violent currents. May and Ash, who stayed inside, have her worried until she sees Ash come back up out of the water.

Five Water Pokémon, and an Echo in the Games

The company only works with aquatic species, which is the least you'd expect from an underwater show. Five Pokémon are linked to Lizabeth: Buizel, Gorebyss, Politoed, Dewgong and Seaking.

None of their moves are recorded, and that says a lot about how they're used: you see them perform an act in front of an audience, not fight a duel. The movie keeps them on the side of the troupe's performers, just like the family members.

The subtlest nod carries her from the movies to the games. A Sinnoh Swimmer is modeled on her in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, then in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, with a team that openly references the show: a Buizel, a Seaking and a Medicham.

In short

Lizabeth belongs to that category of movie characters who win no battles and yet remain indispensable: she brings the context, the vehicle and the composure. She's the one who explains what's at stake, the one who pilots when it's time to dive, the one who decides to give up the temple to save her friends. Once the adventure is over, she watches the Sea Temple sink back beneath the surface with the others, convinced they would see Manaphy again someday.
