Lisa: the passing Trainer who fields six Pokémon against Ash

1060 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

Lisa appears in just one feature film, and yet she sends out a full team in it. The series' third film, the one with the Unown and the crystal, gives her a minor role in two parts: a six-on-six battle she loses by a single point, then an item she lends just as the town closes in on itself. Few supporting film characters prove useful twice.

A Trainer met on the road, who issues the challenge herself

She appears in the series' third feature film, the one taken up almost entirely by the Unown crisis and the crystal. Her role is a minor one and never forced by the plot: she crosses paths with Ash Ketchum's group, and she is the one who decides to battle him.

Her profile comes down to a single line of identity: Pokémon Trainer, no Gym, no organization, no family tie to a hero. Nothing connects her to the main plot, which makes the second thing the film has her do all the more notable.

Six on six: a battle decided by one point

The match opens with her Granbull, which Ash's Totodile takes down by exploiting its superior mobility. So the first point goes to Ash, and the tide turns right away.

Lisa then racks up two wins: her Girafarig gets the better of Chikorita, and her Butterfree does the same to Bulbasaur. Ash, for his part, wins twice more, with Noctowl against Aipom and Cyndaquil against Mankey.

The last Pokémon she sends out is Quagsire, up against Pikachu, and that exchange ends in a draw. The final score is three to two for Ash: both teams have used up all six of their Pokémon, and a single point separates them — a close result for a character the film never shows battling again.

The borrowed Pokégear, as the town turns to crystal

She comes back later in the story, away from any battle. Entei has crystallized the town, and Ash heads into the crystal palace with his friends to find his mom: the expedition needs a way to stay reachable from inside.

Lisa's Pokégear fills that role, lent to Ash before they head in. The gesture lasts a few seconds, but it shifts the character: the passing Trainer becomes the link connecting the rescue team to what is happening outside. Her profile comes down to these two scenes, a battle and an object.

A bandana, two voices and three familiar Pokémon

Her bandana is an almost exact match for the one later worn by May, whose outfit only arrives with the sixth season, the start of Advanced Generation. The visual echo comes with a production coincidence: in Latin America, both characters are voiced by the same actress.

The dub holds a second curiosity for her, in English this time: she shares her first name with her own voice actress. These details carry no narrative weight, but they partly explain why a character seen only once remains recognizable.

One last remark concerns her team. Two of her Pokémon also belong to Ash elsewhere in the series, and a third is the pre-evolved form of a species he owns — but none of the three is in his hands on the day of their match, which robs the scene of any mirror effect. The coincidence in her lineup was therefore never exploited on screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which movie does Lisa appear in?
In the series' third feature film, the one with the Unown and the crystal palace. She plays a supporting role there, split between a battle against Ash and a favor she does later in the story.
  • What Pokémon does Lisa use?
Six: Granbull, Girafarig, Butterfree, Aipom, Mankey and Quagsire. All of them take part in her match against Ash, which is rare for a one-off character.
  • Who wins the battle between Lisa and Ash?
Ash, with a score of three to two. The final exchange, between Lisa's Quagsire and Pikachu, ends in a draw and doesn't settle anything.
  • Why does Lisa lend her Pokégear to Ash?
Because Entei has crystallized the town. Ash and his friends enter the crystal palace to find his mom, and the device lets them stay reachable from inside.
  • Why does Lisa look like May?
Their bandanas are almost identical, even though May only appears several seasons later. The two characters also share the same voice actress in Latin America, by pure coincidence.

In short

Lisa has no badge, no arc and no planned return: she belongs to the category of Trainers the movies cross paths with once. Yet she comes away with two very clear marks — a six-on-six battle lost by a single point, and a Pokégear lent at the exact moment the story needed it. For a minor role, that is a more useful place than most.
