1187 words | Reading time: 5 minutes
Before she was Dawn's mother, Johanna won a Grand Festival. The anime makes her a former Top Coordinator living in Twinleaf Town, in the Sinnoh region, and the games of the same era give her the same role as a mother, under a different name in their French versions. In the anime, her profile comes down to just a few facts, but they paint a consistent character: a career already over, two Pokémon, and a title her daughter is now chasing in turn.

A Contest Career Wrapped Up Before Her Daughter's Began
The anime introduces her in the very first episode of the Diamond & Pearl series, at home in Twinleaf Town. Her title isn't just for show: she won the Grand Festival at the age her daughter is when the adventure begins, and the series presents her as a former Top Coordinator, in other words a competitor who has retired from the circuit.
The torch is passed through an object. When Dawn leaves home for her own journey, her mother slips her a Ribbon — and that Ribbon is the very first one she herself ever won in a Contest. The trophy of one finished career becomes the starting point of another.
Her screen time follows her daughter's: she appears throughout the Sinnoh series, then reappears much later, for one episode of the Journeys series, with a different voice actress in the French dub.
Glameow and Umbreon, Two Nearly Identical Movesets
In the anime, only two Pokémon are on record for her: a Glameow and an Umbreon, both of them female. That's not much for a former competitor, and the series ties no other species to her in any lasting way.
Their movesets overlap almost entirely: Quick Attack, Swift, Attract, Shadow Ball and Iron Tail appear on both, the same trio of Normal, Ghost and Steel types. Only Fake Out and Shadow Claw belong to Glameow alone, which makes it the fuller version of the same set of moves.
Yet a third Pokémon shows up at her side for a single episode of the Diamond & Pearl series: a Milotic. It was only a mirage projected by a Mismagius, the species never came back afterward, and so it doesn't count as part of her team.
🌙 Johanna's nocturnal partner has its own section: browse the Umbreon collection.

Two Completed Battles: One Loss, One Win
The first documented match pits her against Lila. Her Glameow takes on Lila's Delcatty, and the match ends in defeat — the only one the series ever hands her.
The second is a double battle, and it sets her against her own daughter: Dawn sends out Piplup and Pachirisu against the Glameow and Umbreon duo. The mother comes out on top, in an episode whose title bills it as a family showdown.
These two outings are the only battles of hers the series sees through to the end, and Glameow takes part in both: it's Glameow, rather than Umbreon, that serves as her main partner.
Ingrid: The Same Character Under Her French Game Name
Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, followed by their remakes Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, give her exactly the same job: she is the player character's mother, Dawn or Lucas depending on your playthrough. But the French versions of these games call her Ingrid.
Johanna and Ingrid really are the same woman, the first name coming from the anime, the second from the French games — and other languages add even more, from Katrin in German to Casilda in Spanish or Olga in Italian. Enough to send you hunting for her under two separate entries.
Still, most of what's known about her career comes from the anime. The games only brush against it: the Grand Festival and the two Contest partners belong to the anime.

In short
Johanna fits in just a few lines, and that's exactly what makes her easy to read: a Contest competitor who, in the anime, put her Ribbons away before the story even begins. The series leaves her two Pokémon, two completed matches and one keepsake passed down; the French games leave her another name. The rest belongs to her daughter, who is chasing a title her mother already holds.
