Erica: The Pacifidlog Town Coordinator Driven by Jealousy

Two episodes, a single Pokémon, and a rivalry that has nothing to do with sport. Erica is a Coordinator from Pacifidlog Town, in Hoenn. She enters the scene just as May sits down with Joshua, Erica's boyfriend, and she can't stand it. Everything she then does on the Contest stage stems from that initial irritation.

Pacifidlog Town: A Rival Who Declares Herself Before the First Battle

Along with her friends, May stops in Pacifidlog Town, Erica's hometown. May's Skitty runs off during a training session on the beach, and while getting it back, she meets Joshua, another competitor, who suggests she enter the local Contest. Erica cuts their conversation short almost before it has begun: Joshua is her boyfriend, and she doesn't like what she sees.

What follows is more a skirmish than a sporting challenge. She teases her new rival, pushes her to enter Skitty in the Contest and shows off her Jynx right away, by way of a warning. May, for her part, can't quite work out what she's being blamed for, since she has only just met the boy.

Team Rocket's arrival, out to steal Pikachu and Ash's Snorunt, confirms what drives the character. Joshua gets May out of harm's way with his Houndoom's Swift, and the pair they make becomes unbearable to Erica, who cuts the fight short with a Hyper Beam rather than let it drag on.

The Contest: An Ice Tornado, Then a Duel Against an Impostor

Her opening performance relies on two chained moves, Blizzard then Psychic, which produce an ice tornado. She clears the first round along with Joshua, May and a Jessie entered undercover with Meowth — who had first refused to compete, before changing his mind on spotting a Persian among the participants.

The second-round draw pits Erica against Jessie and sends May up against Joshua: a bracket that delights her, because she already sees it as May's elimination. Her Jynx has only four documented moves — Psychic, Blizzard, Lovely Kiss and Hyper Beam — but they're enough to cover offense, showmanship and keeping opponents at bay.

The duel turns into a disguise act. Meowth, convinced that the opponent has a crush on him, dodges Lovely Kiss and then changes appearance again and again with Transform: Sunflora, Kirlia and finally Wailord. It's Psychic that ends the masquerade, the balloon of the last costume giving way under the pressure. Jessie is disqualified, Team Rocket is forced to reveal itself, the net thrown at Jynx turns back on them, and a Hyper Beam sends the trio blasting off.

What Her Match Record Shows

Her record lists only one scored match: her Jynx against May's Skitty, and the win goes to May. The irony is complete, since it was Erica herself who had pushed her rival to enter that Skitty rather than another Pokémon.

Backstage, she still tries to undermine the winner's confidence, to no effect whatsoever. Her run ends there: two consecutive episodes of season 8, in the Advanced Generation series, and the source credits her with nothing else.

Three actresses have voiced her — Chiemi Chiba in Japanese, Amy Birnbaum in English, Isabelle Paternotte in the French dub. For such a short role, her narrative function is clear: she serves as a one-off obstacle on May's path through Hoenn, driven by jealousy rather than a Coordinator's ambition.
