Drasna: the Kalos Elite Four's defensive Dragon expert

1292 words | Reading time: 6 minutes

Her dragons don't strike first: they take the hits. Drasna holds one of the four seats of the Kalos League's Elite Four, the Dragon-type one, and welcomes Trainers in a chamber named after her signature creature. Yet her calling doesn't come from Kalos, but from a Sinnoh town her grandparents hail from, whose legends filled her childhood.

A Chamber of Her Own in the Kalos League

The Kalos Elite Four doesn't have to be faced in a set order: players choose for themselves whom to start with, and each of the four members has their own chamber. Drasna's is the one at the lower left, the Dragonmark Chamber.

The four members of this Elite Four share an unusual design constraint: each one's look nods to a cliché or a facet of French culture. For Drasna, it's the Gauls, the source of her entire wardrobe style.

She defends the Dragon type alongside her colleagues Wikstrom, Malva and Siebold. It's with the first of them that she goes to train in the anime, as told in our profile of Wikstrom, the Steel-type specialist.

Celestic Town, Dialga and Palkia: Where Her Calling Began

Drasna herself explains that her grandparents are from Celestic Town, a town in the Sinnoh region. Her Elite Four specialty therefore comes from a family heritage rooted elsewhere, not from a local Kalos tradition.

She grew up steeped in the legends of Dialga and Palkia, the two figures that Celestic Town places at the heart of its folklore. That's where her desire to devote herself to Dragon-type Pokémon came from.

The mobile game made her playable on August 7, 2023, after long keeping her as a mere non-player character; there she forms a duo with Dragalge. Her description there sums up her method in one sentence: she lives in Kalos following her family's teachings, and battles powerful Trainers to help her Pokémon grow stronger.

The World Coronation Series: Twelfth in the Hyper Class

She enters the anime during the Journeys series. In the very next episode, Goh hears about a past battle against her: nothing had dented her dragons' defensive abilities.

Entered in the World Coronation Series, she climbs into the Super Class and then the Hyper Class, where she reaches twelfth place. The draw then pits her against Ash, and she tells a reporter in an interview how eager she is to face a Trainer of his caliber.

Before the match, she heads to Wikstrom's Castle of Chivalry to train with him. There, her Altaria gets the better of her colleague's Escavalier, and she leaves announcing her intention to show Ash what the Kalos Elite Four is made of.

The Battle Against Ash, Won and Then Lost on Defense

When the day comes, she introduces herself to Ash to size up her opponent and takes a particular interest in his Dracovish, without ever losing her smile. The battle opens with Noivern, against Ash's Sirfetch’d.

Surprised that the Wild Duck Pokémon lands the first blow, she strikes back with her Pokémon's sound-based attacks. When Sirfetch’d unleashes its new move, Meteor Assault, Noivern blocks it with a simple flap of its wings — exactly the display Goh had heard described.

Ash then switches to Dracovish, tough enough to force Drasna to recall Noivern and send out Altaria. The Pokémon fends off the assault with Cotton Guard, then Drasna has it Mega Evolve: Mega Altaria gains the Fairy type, which she immediately uses to neutralize her opponent's Dragon-type moves.

Dracovish takes too much damage and gives way to Sirfetch’d, which answers another onslaught from Mega Altaria with Meteor Assault — to everyone's surprise, Drasna's Pokémon goes down, but its exhausted victor collapses right after.

That leaves Noivern against Dracovish. She harries Ash's dragon relentlessly, until a Dragon Rush, launched to its Trainer's cheers, crushes the opposing Dragon Pulse. Noivern faints, and Drasna loses the battle; she comforts her Pokémon, congratulates Ash on his ninth place in the Hyper Class and promises to cheer him on from here on.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where do you battle Drasna in the Kalos League?
In the Dragonmark Chamber, the room at the lower left. The four members of the Kalos Elite Four each have their own chamber, and you can take them on in whatever order you like.
  • Why did Drasna specialize in the Dragon type?
Her grandparents come from Celestic Town, in Sinnoh. She grew up surrounded by the legends of Dialga and Palkia, and that folklore is what made her want to devote herself to Dragon types.
  • What does Drasna's look refer to?
The Gauls. Like the other three members of the Kalos Elite Four, she embodies a cliché or a facet of French culture, and that's where her wardrobe style comes from.
  • Which Pokémon does Drasna use against Ash?
Noivern and Altaria, which she Mega Evolves into Mega Altaria to take advantage of the Fairy type against her opponent's Dragon-type moves.
  • Does Drasna beat Ash in the World Coronation Series?
No. After Mega Altaria and Sirfetch’d both go down, her Noivern faints to Dracovish's Dragon Rush. She then congratulates Ash on his ninth place in the Hyper Class.

In short

Drasna holds a low-key spot in a League designed as a gallery of French clichés, but her profile rests on one clear idea: with her, the Dragon type is played on defense. Wings that block, Cotton Guard, a Mega Evolution that adds the Fairy type to snuff out enemy attacks — even her defeat comes through attrition, not collapse. In her, the Kalos Elite Four gains its most patient specialist, even though her own calling comes from Sinnoh.
