847 words | Reading time: 4 minutes

A ten-year-old Breeder who never shows up alone. His job comes down to one word: Breeder. The rest of his story comes down to two Pokémon and a farewell match.

A Debut Shared with Lyra

Khoury appears in the series at the same time as Lyra, and the two characters are inseparable: they join Ash's group together, in an episode whose title, "An Egg Scramble!", already tells you what it's about.

The pairing is no accident. Khoury works as a Pokémon Breeder, the job of looking after Pokémon long before they ever battle.

His profile puts him at about ten years old, the same age as the heroes he travels with. So he isn't the grown-up expert who shows up to teach a lesson, but an apprentice of the same age, with the job already in mind and the experience still to be gained.

Lyra
The two characters make their entrance at the same time and never part again.

Shy on the Surface, Observant Underneath

The character first comes across through his hesitations: he lacks confidence and knows he's a beginner. That's a rare stance among passing companions, who usually arrive with a conviction to defend and a talent already formed.

Yet the portrait doesn't stop at that reserve. He's credited with a sharp mind and a remarkable gift for observation, exactly the two qualities that make a useful Breeder — whereas a competitive Trainer relies more on daring and tempo.

His family fits in a single line, and it's from Johto: his father ran a berry stand during the Johto Festival. It's a tiny detail, but it roots the boy in a trade built on care rather than in a line of fighters.

Gible, Totodile and a Mid-Match Evolution

His best-documented catch is a Gible, caught in an episode whose title says it all: "A Rivalry to Gible On!" A Dragon type in the hands of a beginner Breeder isn't exactly the most docile choice.

The other is a Totodile, Johto's Water-type starter. Only two Pokémon are confirmed for him: that's the profile of a passing character, not of a rival meant to come back season after season.

His exit plays out in "Bagged Then Tagged!", a Tag Battle where he teams up with Lyra against Ash and Dawn. It's during this match that his Totodile evolves into Croconaw: farewell and progress in the same scene.

  • What do we know about Khoury's family?
Just one detail: his father ran a berry stand during the Johto Festival.
  • How does Khoury leave the series?
Through a Tag Battle alongside Lyra against Ash and Dawn. It's during this match that his Totodile evolves.

In short

There's very little material on Khoury, and that's exactly what makes him easy to read: a beginner Breeder, two Pokémon, a berry-selling father and a farewell match. The series uses him as a counterpoint to the Trainers it usually follows — someone who observes and raises Pokémon rather than someone who wins. His evolution, both literal and figurative, comes down to the last battle he fights.
