Brassius: the sculptor Gym Leader who treats battles as art

703 words | Reading time: 3 minutes

His Gym Test is all about picking flowers. Brassius runs the Artazon Gym, champions the Grass type, and also happens to be a sculptor whose reputation reaches far beyond the world of Trainers. Known as "the Verdant Virtuoso," he sees every battle as a work of art — and he designed his Gym Test to judge the artistic sensibility of those who come to challenge him.

A sculptor before a Gym Leader

Brassius is a famous artist and sculptor whose talent is recognized throughout Paldea. Being a Gym Leader is only one part of what he does.

His specialty flows directly from his work: he draws his inspiration from nature, which explains a Gym devoted entirely to the Grass type.

The nickname he goes by says the rest. "The Verdant Virtuoso" plays on color as much as on virtuosity, and it fits him like a glove.

Sunflora Hide-and-Seek: a different kind of test

Every Gym in Paldea sets a test before the battle. Brassius's is Sunflora Hide-and-Seek, and it measures neither strength nor speed.

Its purpose is to judge the artistic sensibility of his potential opponents. What Brassius gauges there is the challenger's eye.

The logic fits his conviction: a Pokémon battle is a work of art, and it should reveal the challenger's creativity as much as their skill.

A cultivated team

His roster revolves around Arboliva and Smoliv, two species native to the region, which carry the tree motif right into his team.

He rounds it out with Lilligant, Vileplume, Breloom, Tsareena and Petilil.

Sudowoodo closes out the list, and the choice is not without irony for a sculptor: a Pokémon that imitates a tree without being one.

🌿 Grass-type Pokémon have their own section: see the Pokémon plushies.

In the anime, an artist in crisis

The anime shows him in a far less serene light. Brassius appears depressed there, destroying some of his own creations.

It's a rumor that leads the heroes to him: the artist supposedly spotted a rare Pokémon, which is enough to set off a trip to Artazon.

The eccentric Gym Leader turns back into a host as soon as you show interest in something other than his badge.

In short

His flower-gathering test judges sensibility, his specialty extends his studio, and his team ends with a Pokémon that imitates a tree. For him, a battle isn't a test but a work of art two people create together.
