Chaz: The One-Episode Coordinator Who Unlocks Rustboro

863 words | Reading time: 4 minutes

He loses his final and exits the story right away — but he leaves behind what it takes to win a Badge. Chaz is a Pokémon Coordinator from Rustboro City, met at his own hometown's Contest. The series gives him two jobs in a single episode: explaining a discipline the audience is just discovering, then giving Ash the idea he was missing to take on the local Gym.

The Coordinator Who Serves as an Instruction Manual

Ash's group runs into Chaz while he's training with his friend Janet in Rustboro City. The two Coordinators are the first the series ever puts on screen in front of the heroes, before a single Contest has even begun.

Their role is first and foremost educational: they explain to the group what a Pokémon Contest is and what rules it follows. A brand-new discipline needed a voice to introduce it, and the episode hands that role to two supporting characters rather than to a narrator.

For May, who is just starting out on the circuit, the encounter serves as her very first lesson. Chaz is, quite literally, the first Coordinator of her career — a status the character never makes use of again.

29.5 Points, a Skipped Semifinal, a Lost Final

In the appeal round, Chaz scores 29.5 points with his Venomoth, the second-highest total on the board behind Janet's. The score is more than enough to send him through to the final rounds.

He wins his semifinal — but the episode doesn't show it and simply announces the result. The shortcut says enough about his status: the story needs him in the final, not his road to get there.

The final pits him against Janet, the friend he was training with a few minutes earlier. His Venomoth is stopped there by the opposing Beautifly, and the defeat is clear-cut, with no suspense drawn out.

The Iron Tail Left to Ash

Outside the competition, Chaz takes an interest in the heroes' paths as Trainers and spots a concrete problem: Ash has nothing to counter the Rustboro City Gym, run by Roxanne.

His answer is a demonstration. He shows Ash and Pikachu the move Iron Tail, which his Sentret has mastered, to give them a fighting chance against Rock-type Pokémon.

Chaz briefly reappears much later in the same Advanced Generation series, with nothing new at stake. Only two Pokémon are confirmed for him, Venomoth and Sentret, which is enough to cover both his roles: competing, then passing on what he knows.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is Chaz in the anime?
A minor Pokémon Coordinator met at the Rustboro City Contest. Along with his friend Janet, he's the first Coordinator the heroes meet, and he's the one who explains to them what a Contest is all about.
  • Which Pokémon does Chaz have?
Two species are confirmed for him: Venomoth, which he enters in Contests, and Sentret, which he uses for an Iron Tail demonstration.
  • Did Chaz win the Rustboro City Contest?
No. He finishes second in the appeal round with 29.5 points, wins a semifinal the episode doesn't show, then clearly loses the final to Janet, whose Beautifly knocks out his Venomoth.
  • Why does Chaz show Iron Tail to Ash?
Because he sees that Ash has nothing to take on Roxanne, the Rustboro City Gym Leader, and her Rock-type Pokémon. The move, mastered by his Sentret, offers a solution to that exact problem.

In short

Chaz belongs to that category of characters the series uses up in a single episode and only brings back later for a cameo. Yet his appearance is far from decorative: he lays down the rules of a discipline that will fill entire seasons, and he leaves having handed Ash the key to a Badge. A mentor's role, filled by an unlucky finalist.
