Morgan: The Chatelaine Who Locks Down Rotation Battles
Share
1168 words | Reading time: 5 minutes
Until she has fallen once, half of the Rotation format stays locked. Morgan is the eldest of the four Chatelaines who run the Battle Maison, the facility that Pokémon X and Y and the Hoenn remakes share identically. She isn't one opponent among twenty there: she's the milestone that decides what comes next.

The eldest of four Chatelaine sisters
The Battle Maison doesn't have one master, it has four, and they're sisters. Morgan, Nita, Dana and Evelyn share the facility, and Morgan is the oldest of the four.
The game takes that position literally: it falls to her to look after her strong-willed younger sisters and keep them from stepping out of line. A family hierarchy laid on top of a difficulty hierarchy, which is still rare for facility staff.
Her responsibility is a specific one: she's the one who runs the house's Rotation Battles. Her French name, Aurore, is shared with the Sinnoh heroine, known as Dawn in English, though the two have nothing to do with each other: the Chatelaine is called Morgan in English and Lematin in Japanese.
The twentieth battle, then the fiftieth
The Rotation Battle challenge runs without a breather, and Morgan holds its very last slot: she shows up in the twentieth battle in a row. Everything before that is a line of interchangeable opponents; she's the one you know is waiting at the end.
Beating her opens a door, and once is enough: the Super Rotation Battle challenge only unlocks after a first win against her in the regular version. So the facility uses a character, not a win counter, as its access condition.
The higher format reuses the same structure and stretches it out: Morgan remains the final opponent there, in the fiftieth consecutive battle. Fifty battles without a single slip before you see her again: it's a test of endurance as much as of team building.
When she doesn't come alone
You also run into Morgan in the Multi Battle challenge, whether you enter alone or with a friend. In these tag battles, she brings one of her sisters instead of fielding a second half of her own team.
Which one depends on how you play: Nita when the player's partner is controlled by the console, Evelyn when two players genuinely team up. So the opposing side changes with the mode, not with the cartridge.
Her two Pokémon, for their part, are drawn at random from the pool she normally uses on her own, and since the Battle Maison is strictly identical in Pokémon X and Y and in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, that pool doesn't change from one version to the other. You know who you're up against without knowing what's going to come out.

Outside the main games: mobile and cards
The mobile game added her on August 28, 2024, in her standard outfit rather than a one-off variant. There she teams up with Virizion, the Pokémon she also fields in the Super Rotation Battle challenge, alongside Cobalion, Terrakion and Latias.
This pair isn't earned over the course of a storyline: it's exchanged for a BP Sync Pair Super Voucher. So Morgan belongs to the category of recruits you get in exchange for something, not the ones you meet as you progress.
On the trading card side, her first appearance dates back to February 2019 in France, in the Team Up expansion of the Sun & Moon series. So the card game brought her out of the Battle Maison five years before the mobile game did.

The eldest of the four sisters who run the Battle Maison, along with Nita, Dana and Evelyn. She runs the facility's Rotation Battles and looks after her younger sisters. -
When do you battle Morgan?
In the twentieth and final battle of the Rotation Battle challenge, then in the fiftieth of the Super Rotation Battle challenge. You also meet her in the Multi Battle challenge, alone or with a friend. -

By beating Morgan once in the Rotation Battle challenge. Until you've secured that win, the higher version of the challenge stays closed. -
Does her team change depending on the game version?
No. The Battle Maison is identical in Pokémon X and Y and in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Morgan uses the same Pokémon in both. In tag battles, her two Pokémon are drawn at random from the ones she uses on her own. -
Does Morgan appear outside the main games?
Yes. The mobile game added her on August 28, 2024, in her standard outfit and as a sync pair with Virizion, obtainable with a BP Sync Pair Super Voucher. She also has her own card, released in France in February 2019 in the Team Up expansion.
In short
Morgan has no storyline and no region to save: she's an access condition. Final opponent in the twentieth battle, the lock on Super Rotation, then final opponent again in the fiftieth: the Battle Maison has given the eldest Chatelaine the job of measuring the player's consistency. The rest of her existence comes down to two dates, a card in 2019 and a mobile sync pair in 2024.
