Astrid: The Ace Trainer Whose Mega Absol Took Down Ash

1117 words | Reading time: 5 minutes

Three appearances, three battles, and a record that fits on one line: one win, two losses. Astrid is a Kalos Ace Trainer whom the anime brings off the bench three times, always for the same reason: her Absol can Mega Evolve. She has no story arc and no declared rivalry, but she leaves behind one of the few matchups in the series you can compare from one meeting to the next.

Three Appearances Across Three Formats

Astrid makes her entrance in Mega Evolution Special I, the first installment of the shorts devoted to the phenomenon. There she crosses paths with Alain for a one-on-one battle, and her Mega Absol falls to her opponent's Mega Charizard X. The encounter comes down to a single exchange.

She returns on the big screen in Pokémon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction, this time for a three-on-three battle against Ash. She wins two rounds to one: her first Pokémon goes down, and the next two settle the matter.

Her last appearance brings her back to the regular series, in the middle of the Kalos League (the Lumiose Conference), during season 19. Ash gets his revenge there, and the decisive exchange once again pits Mega Absol against the hero's Hawlucha.

The Same Duel Played Twice, with Opposite Outcomes

The movie and the League episode both end on the same face-off: Astrid's Mega Absol against Ash's Hawlucha. On the big screen, she's the one who wins the exchange, and that round seals her overall victory.

In front of the League crowd, the matchup is identical and the result flips. Hawlucha gets the better of Mega Absol, which is enough to swing the battle in the hero's favor.

The repetition is anything but trivial. Astrid serves as a progress marker: same Pokémon, same opponent, reversed outcome—the most economical way to show that a Trainer has closed the gap between two meetings, without having to spell it out for the audience.

A Mega Absol with Four Moves of Four Types

Astrid's Absol is her trump card, and its moveset has a quirk you notice as soon as you line it up. Its four moves belong to four different types: Psycho Cut for Psychic, Megahorn for Bug, Dark Pulse for Dark and Shadow Claw for Ghost.

A set like that isn't trying to hit the same spot twice. It aims for breadth of coverage rather than repetition, and it explains how Absol holds its own in three very different battle formats— a one-off duel, a three-on-three match, then a League bracket.

Mega Evolution completes the picture. Astrid triggers it in each of her three appearances, without exception: it's the trait the series remembers her for, and the reason an Ace Trainer with no storyline of her own ends up facing Alain and then Ash.

Pyroar and Meowstic, the Team Seen Only on the Big Screen

The movie is the only time Astrid sends out anything other than Absol. She opens with a male Pyroar sent out against Ash's Pikachu, and it's the only one of her three Pokémon to lose its exchange.

Its moveset is the exact opposite of Absol's. Flamethrower and Fire Fang are the same type: two attacks for a single angle, where the team's star Pokémon covers four.

The Meowstic that comes in next, a female, restores the balance by beating Ash's Froakie, with Charge Beam and Scratch as her only known moves. These two are seen only once and never used again: outside the movie, Astrid always battles with her Absol alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is Astrid in Pokémon?
An Ace Trainer from Kalos who appears only in the anime. You can see her in the Mega Evolution specials, in the movie Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction, and then in a Kalos League episode.
  • Which Pokémon does Astrid have?
Three: an Absol that can Mega Evolve, a male Pyroar and a female Meowstic. Only Absol fights in all three of her battles; the other two come out only in the movie.
  • Has Astrid ever beaten Ash?
Yes, once. In the movie, she wins a three-on-three battle two rounds to one. At the Kalos League, however, it's Ash who comes out on top.
  • What moves does Astrid's Mega Absol know?
Psycho Cut, Megahorn, Dark Pulse and Shadow Claw: four moves of four different types—Psychic, Bug, Dark and Ghost.
  • Who does Astrid lose her first battle to?
To Alain, in Mega Evolution Special I. Her Mega Absol faces Mega Charizard X and goes down.

In short

Astrid has no region to defend and no plot to drive: she passes through the Kalos saga in three appearances and moves on. Her usefulness comes down to a single function: putting a Mega Absol in front of the hero and measuring how far he's come. The movie gives her the win, the League takes it back, and in between, viewers get the same duel replayed exactly— for a supporting role, that's a service few more prominent side characters provide so clearly.
